Does population growth threaten humanity?
Of the many social challenges we face globally today, there is one that is a much larger threat to the human population than others. That threat is the rate in which or population is increasing in all countries around the world, including Canada. Many people who live in the western and more developed countries of the world believe that this issue is isolated to the developing countries that are less educated in the use of birth control and contraceptives. Canada’s national population increases around 2% each year and around 4-5% a year in some of the Northern communities. How can we house and shelter another eighty million people each year. Especially, since the prices of land and homes worldwide continue to increase as well on a yearly basis. The way that cities are urbanizing now, everybody wants to live in or as close to the large urban centres as possible. This is for the economic benefit of working in the city versus in the rural communities. We no longer need multiple farmers when we can have one large farmstead producing multiple crops. But with all these other people trying to move into the cities there is nowhere to put everyone so there is the creation of suburbs, condos, and other public housing sectors all over. This can only solve the present issue we have of where we can fit everybody. But, if by the 2100 we are expected to have a global population of over eleven million people we will not be able to control this issue as they are capable now. In the United Kingdom, there is already a struggle to meet the demand in housing; this is also affected by the number of single occupancy homes in the country. Globally, what we are learning from the United Kingdom is that when the supply of housing can’t keep up with the growth of the country’s population than the cost of living within that cost of living will increase, including house and renting prices, overall increasing the global wealth
