CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION In America, one of the most popular degrees to earn is a degree in business. A business degree opens many doors and job opportunities for young graduates each year. Most graduates are hired anywhere from three to nine months after graduation, with many just being introduced to the workforce and the world of business. This new and exciting job may lead to a world of opportunities for the graduate. A first job in business usually teaches new employees much more than their degrees did, such as on the job training, networking, and professionalism. These new jobs may seem exciting, but businesses often have issues that accompany the new opportunities. One of the emerging issues in business’ today is the lack of diversity …show more content…
Sometimes in the business world, though, that is not true. One of the main ethical issues in business is the lack of diversity. Business Ethics: Decision Making for Personal Integrity and Social Responsibility defines diversity as the existence of diverse languages, cultures, races, orientations, genders, religion, abilities, social classes, and age of people in a firm. The leading cause of the lack of diversity in the workplace is due to discrimination. Discrimination is the unfair treatment of individuals based on race, religion, age, sex, and sexual orientation. Diversity in business settings is a big ethical issue today due to the large number of people being discriminated against due to their race, gender, and sexual orientation. Diversity issues can be solved by understanding why diversity is important, what discriminations occur in the workplace, and how businesses can implement different ways to solve …show more content…
In a Forbes article in 2014, Ekaterina Walter reports on how diversity is essential to business because it helps with innovation. She stresses how important ethics is for a business to grow through innovation, which ultimately leads to successful businesses. She later talks about how businesses shouldn’t just use diversity to get ahead, but to build businesses up using diversity as the key component to that. With more minds, cultures, and points of view, companies are able to get ahead and come up with new innovations that will ultimately help the companies in the long

Decreasing the disparity among whites and people of color eventually leads to higher productivity, stronger work ethic, and better team functioning. “Diversity enhances and affects group performance in diverse teams” (Van Dijk, et. al., 2013). As stated by researchers Winfred Arthur, Jr. and Dennis Doverspike, to have a diverse and successful working environment, employers and business leaders should work on limiting the role they play in privilege and accept more applicants from minority backgrounds (2005). According to researchers at the Texas A&M University and the University of
Merriam-Webster defines diversity as “the condition of having or being composed of differing elements; especially the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization” (Merriam-Webster, 2016). With diversity including many different elements, the concept of workplace diversity also covers a broad spectrum of topics, and continues to evolve as many companies look to expand globally. This subject has become increasingly important among managers over the last couple of decades, and has helped to reinforce other concepts such as affirmative action and equal opportunity employment. While most people believe that everyone should have the same opportunities available to them, and that we
Gender, racial, and ethnic diversity means different things to different people. Some believe that diversity is about quotas, and affirmative action. Others believe that diversity is something that will happen on its own with out intervention. Some experts who study diversity, however, believe that diversity is not something that should be left up to chance. It is important, therefore, for organizations to take action to encourage and foster diversity in the workplace (Clarke, 1995, p. 13).
The importance of diversity, advantages and disadvantages/problems that arise in the workforce will be discussed, as well as the key tools and strategies supervisors need to know about managing diversity in the workplace.
This document will explore what a company can do to foster diversity in the workplace. The business case highlights the development and implementation of organizational initiatives that could:
Diversity is a highly important issue in today’s business, especially in a globalized company. Workplace diversity helps to get better solutions to business problems (Schawbel, 2012). When you have a group of individ...
Companies such as Buzztronics are leading the way in the global economy because of their dedication to diversity in the workplace. In order to build a diverse and successful workforce, a business needs to recruit, train, and retain capable and talented minorities.
In a world that has grown increasingly smaller due to mass media, world travel, and readily available information, the workplace has grown increasingly diverse in both gender and cultural aspects. Individuals no longer live and work within the confines of their geographic locations. At almost any position with any company the individual employee is a part of a larger world economy that harvests assets from the ends of the earth. Because of this, companies seek to capitalize on diversity to become more creative and flexible in their business models.
A basic problem regarding the implementation of diversity into the workplace is that its approach sometimes does not fit the interpretations of equity and equality according to the context in which it was meant.
Living in a country where it was founded by immigrants, diversity is everywhere you go especially in the workplace. There are many types of diversity; ethnicity, gender, religion and age just to name a few. Working in a diverse organization it can give you a taste of the real world, and what you will deal with wherever you go. There is so much diversity in the world today so it is a benefit to experience it in the workplace as well. You are given the chance to learn so many things from different cultures, why wouldn't you want to work in a diverse organization?
In the workplace, it is common to encounter individuals of different cultures, ethnicities, and genders. This diversity can either lead to an introduction of new work methods, or it can lead to conflict between coworkers. In order to avoid conflict, and have all employees work as a cohesive team, managers must educate themselves, and their employees on the topic of cultural diversity. In order for your practices to be considered effective, you must not only respect and recognize an employee’s diversity, you must use their difference to benefit them.
Diversity in the workplace can relate to having staff/employees from a wide rage and different backgrounds, this can include employees of different gender types, physical ability, age, preferred sex, religious belief, life experience, educational background, hardship, all of the above relate very strongly to diversity in the workplace. A workplace diversity policy is to create and manage a workplace environment that encourage
Diversity is all around us and how organizations deal with the notion of diversity can be complex and quite diverse. We know that being diverse in the workplace is important to the organization's success, should be recognized, accepted, and embraced. It’s how the organizations live up to what they believe in and must go above and beyond legal compliance and requirements to promoting diversity and inclusion. Otherwise, employees may view the organization's vision and policies as lip service and only be tolerant of diversity because the organization said so.
