“Disconnected” Reflection Essay
“Disconnected” the documentary of college students who volunteered for one month without a computer put it best, “What’s the point, you`ll never have to go computer-less in the real world.” Asking myself to go without social media, is like asking me not to eat for a day. The idea is impossible. Social media keeps me involved in the world around me. Facebook for friends and family life updates and videos for DIY, Instagram for photos of food and cars, Twitter to keep the highlights short and simple, and Snap Chat to make sure my friends are seeing everything I am doing throughout the day.

Take a moment and brainstorm the idea of the thing you would learn. The film had made the comparison of how hard it is to pick up a new instrument, especially when technology allows us to play and listen to multiple instruments next to each other virtually. The knowledge one`s brain would contain, would be priceless. If technology were to ever fail, who would rise to teach the future generations? This opposes a challenge among myself to learn all things, especially the curriculum of my classes without the direct use of technology for answers. For example, something as simple as spell check. I am going to challenge myself to use a dictionary for proper spelling rather than technology. For myself, I after viewing the film, it inspires me to take part. What truly convinced me was after the girl student towards the end had finally opened her laptop and emails she said “after all these emails I really feel like I haven’t miss out on much.” I do not agree to cut all usage off. Social media, yes, but for essentials usage is approved. The little things in life are passing me by, because my head is always down.
