In English history, the first navigation act was passed in 1381 but did not stick because they did not have many ships at this time. Then, between 1651 and 1733, British Parliament passed a series of acts or laws that were meant to regulate trade in colonial America. These laws actually stuck. The British had control over the colonies at this time and they wanted to make sure that America was only trading with them, their mother country. The Navigation Acts of 1651 were focused on shipping of goods. The new law required most American goods to be carried in either English or Colonial ships.
