Difference Between Imperialism And Colonialism

Often times, the concepts colonialism and imperialism are confused and as result the terms are often used interchangeably. However, both concepts have different meanings. This paper will give a brief analysis of the difference between both concepts. In addition, it will also make reference to a country that experienced colonialism and one that experienced imperialism.
According to Cynthia Barrow-Giles (2002), colonialism may be defined as “the conquest and settlement of a weak or backward country for the purpose of settlement by a stronger or advanced alien nation” (p.2). Also, Loomba (2015), defines colonialism as a settlement in a new country…a body of people who settle in a new locality, forming a community subjected to or connected with their parent state; the community so formed, consisting of the original settlers and their descendants and successors, as long as the connection with the parent state is kept up (p.19).

According to the classical Marxism, imperialism may be defined as “a stage of capitalism leading to political, economic and military rivalry and conflict between the advanced capitalist” (as cited in Barrow-Giles, 2002, p. 2). Also, James O’Connor defines imperialism as “the formal or informal control over local economic resources in a manner advantageous to the metropolitan power, and at the expense of the local economy” (as cited in Roxborough, 1979, p. 57). Moreover, according to Coffin, Stacey, Cole, & Symes (2010), imperialism is “the process of extending one state’s of control over another”. By way of explanation, imperialism means creating an empire, expanding into neighboring regions and expanding its dominance far.
