Development Across the Lifespan: Physical: Elderly people physically slow down and have lower energy levels. There are changes in the body systems and organs that can usually result in all types of diseases or sicknesses. There is usually visual and hearing loss, loss of taste and smell, reaction time, and loss of balance. Most individuals in this stage have some type of chronic conditions. Alzheimer's disease and Dementia become more prevalent with age. Individuals may experience loss of teeth and poor nutrition. Wrinkles start to develop along with trouble sleeping at night. Social/Cultural: At the stage elderly people don't involve in as much interaction with others. They do enjoy being around family and friends for the support and love. They are more interested in being around individuals who can help to enhance their emotional state. They are not really interested in going out much and moving around a lot. Many in the late adulthood have retired and become committed to younger ones in their families. Some older people still may have to work to support themselves financially. Final Course Reflection from a Counseling perspective: I really learned a great deal of information from this course. A lot of the information helped me to understand myself as well as others. I must admit that I do see certain situations and circumstances a little different now. I understand some of the things my children are going through in life right now a little better. This course has really enlighten me about a lot things in my life at this point. I will use this same information to help me empathize and help my students as a school counselor. Emerging Adulthood represents the period of development from late teens through their twenties, mainly focusing on the ages 18-25. This is the period which people start exploring and realizing the capabilities of their lives, which then helps them characterize as adults and no longer teenagers. This topic of psychology is compelling to me because it’s a stage that every adult has lived through, it’s interesting that we have all experienced it differently based on our life circumstances and demographics. It’s interesting to see the changes throughout the years and eventually it will be easier for young people to explore these years as more young adults are going to school nowadays. There are many complications that can arise as one ages. As stated in the Aging Concepts and Controversies (2012) book, there are basically two worlds of aging; the ill-derly and the well-derly. While those that are well are able to take care of themselves or need very little help to perform their daily activities; those that are ill most likely we need to have some form of long-term care. As stated earlier, when looking at care options for older adults, there are two forms of care that many people try to decide between. The first option is home care. In this form of long-term care, the elder person is looked after by a spouse, family member such as a child or grandchild, or a close family friend. The other type of long-term care is nursing home or institutionalized care, where the elderly person is taking care of by professionals and lives in the facility where they are being taken care of. Many times it is not easy to decide which type of care will be best, it depends on many factors, such as the cost, level of care needed, and many other factors. To date, researchers have not found a single theory that covers all people. Growing old can mean different things for different people. However, a common trend between all elderly people is that individuals who had active lives as young adults generally remain active as older adults, while individuals who were distant in their young lives become more disengaged as they age. In both theories, the old commonly conduct a person life review where he or she may reminisce for houses on end, muse over photo albums, or visit childhood places. They seek to share their life’s experience with another and try to find purpose and meaning within their lives.
Many people experience loneliness and depression in old age, either as a result of living alone or due to lack of close family ties and reduced connections with their culture of origin, which results in an inability to actively participate in the community activities. With advancing age, it is inevitable that people lose connection with their friendship networks and that they find it more difficult to initiate new friendships and to belong to new networks. Getting older is not only hard on the individual but, also the family. It is difficult for a person who has taken care of themselves all their life to wake up one day and realize they can no longer do things on their own. That is why their are nursing homes. There are many speculations about whether or not it is okay to place a family member in a nursing home however, there are many benefits to nursing homes. The adult children of the elderly should opt for professional care for their aged parents rather than allowing them to live on their own because, nursing homes have constant help, daily activities, and people who can give family members continous support.

They also can live in retirement communities, which are areas that have been specifically developed for those in their retirement years (McKenzie & Pinger, 2015, p.288). They participate fully in many public arenas of society. They pursue meaningful activities and they still have much joy in them, and much to offer. That stereotype derived from cartoons that older adults are meaner/grumpier is completely false and that’s why I believe there should be a greater connection between the younger and older population. It seems like a lot of the younger population interacts with older adults only when they are family and not with unrelated older adults. The younger population is often seen as the leaders of our future and the older population is disregarded because they are supposedly a thing from the past. However, the older population has much to offer. I saw that from watching them volunteer and observing that they had much to give in forms of ideas and guidance. I definitely think that there should be more programs in place where the older population can interact more with the younger population in a more meaningful way where both parties benefit greatly from those interactions. The older population should very much be included in the direction of society’s future. If the younger generation is the future then the older generation should collaborate with them to offer guidance and assistance in creating a better future. Society would greatly benefit from the older populations’ input and the older individuals could benefit from feeling more included in

I think it is important, and even more so after this course, to look holistically at psychological conditions and states and at the interactions between biological, cognitive, social, and environmental factors and how they contribute to psychological health or disorder. I have become particularly fascinated by the concepts surrounding the biopsychosocial perspective and of psychoneuroimmunology. The latter is extremely interesting and seems potentially revolutionary in how we conceptualize or utilize the mind-body connection. I now intend to take more advanced classes related to that as I progress though my academic career. I also hope to take classes and learn more about developmental psychology and social psychology. Stemming from these personal interests, although the text and some of the films did expound on this, if there is anything I wish the course had gone over more it would be related to exploring in even greater depth how culture and environment can shape psychology both cognitively and physically. Understanding and researching the multitude of components involved in overall health would benefit and contribute significantly to public health policy, I believe. This course did, however, provide a good foundation to pursue further knowledge
I understand my styles and behaviors better now. Too bad I didn’t take this course earlier in life. Understanding myself will help me understand other people better I believe. That will be helpful concidering the profession I intend to have.
There was a significant amount of knowledge given in this course, involving concepts that in our teaching career will be extremely important. From this course I have gained a significant amount of learning experiences. I had the pleasure learning about how the educational system has come to be what it is today and who were the important people in the creation of the public education, like Horace Mann. Watching the videos and reading the chapters required has opened my eyes more of how a teacher should respond to different situations involving a student, For example when we read the chapter on the laws that revolve around the educators and the students. I had absolutely no clue that students had rights while in school property. Another learning
