Dentistry Personal Statement
As a young child I was always told that my teeth were difficult to work with. They said my teeth were not align well and when I had a loose tooth it was hard to fall off by itself, so a visit to the dentist was necessary. Interestingly, all this comments about my teeth were not made by dentists. When I did go to the dentist, the doctor and his staff were always happy to work with me, I too enjoyed it. My insecurities regarding my teeth were gone and I started to embrace them, but maybe too much. I used to spend 30 minutes every day in front of the mirror flossing, brushing my teeth and analyzing how my orthodontic treatment could go. After visits to my dentist and orthodontist as a teenager, I told my parents that a career in dentistry was what I wanted to do. From that moment I felt committed to this career path and to make everyone comfortable with their smiles when I achieved my goal of becoming a dentist.

It was in helping others where I lost my shyness which had been a factor during my early teenage years. One of my favorite experiences is when the Puerto Rico Pre- Dental Association or any other biology association in the University of Puerto Rico hosts a breakfast for homeless or people in need at the city of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. At these events we enjoy serving food to everyone who comes, we talk to them and have a little fun playing dominoes. We have all had those dentist or orthodontist appointments that were a complete nightmare. Getting poked, jabbed, and pinched in the mouth. Well, I have been thinking since I have had this experience and wouldn’t want anyone else to go through that. Maybe I could become an orthodontist and ensure to my patients that these problems do not happen. I enjoy helping people that I don’t know and being as precise as I need to be, to be an orthodontist. Though I have never had any experience at all with any of this, that is what school is for. I realize that being an orthodontist is the best career choice for me.
My ambition for studying a degree for dental hygiene propagated during my research about it. After being lost, puzzled, and indecisive for a while now about which health-related career I desire the most, I finally made up my mind and selected a major. I decided to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science after accomplishing an Associate’s Degree in Science, which is an open field filled with opportunities for several health professions. I realized that a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science is the way to go as it enables me to switch back and forth between all of the health occupations that I worship. Down the road, I can even further my education and specialize in a specific domain that I am willing to commit to. In general, Health Science is a major where professionals undergo several tasks such as improving their community’s health and overall wellbeing, get involved in nutrition related conditions, use epidemiological techniques, counteract various infections, and enrich physical and daily health routines.
I plan to use my education to teach the patients about the importance of oral health and what can be done by them to improve their daily brushing habits. Also, I can go on mission trips with other doctors to help patients in need like in Africa, military. I recently signed up to volunteer at okmom program that is going to held in February 2017. It is a two-day event providing free dental clinical treatment to patients that cannot afford insurance or dental services. I am planning to help as assistant and translator at this event.
Dentistry as a profession over the years has evolved rapidly in light of new scientific evidence. Rapidly evolving science and technology have implemented changes within dentistry as evidenced by new standards and guidelines being produced by nationally recognised associations including National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) in Scotland, in provision of new scientific evidence. The latest standards and guidelines produced, endorse everyday clinical practice through evidence based dentistry (REF). All dental professionals as part of continued professional development are expected to keep to date on relevant guidelines and knowledge related to their practice (REF). This is supported by the General Dental Council who state all clinicians must maintain their professional knowledge and competence throughout their working career (REF).
I chose the career I'm focusing on because going to the dentist or orthodontist and getting my teeth cleaned, whitened, or worked on has always been something I looked forward to. Having straight, white, "perfect" teeth is something that I've always wished to have. As I slowly lost teeth to the time they all grew back in my parents as well as I knew that I was going to need braces. All the various factors that lead me to dentistry amounted to just a part of my decision to become a dentist, the other half of my decision came from the simple question, “(w)ill this be a satisfying career for me?” A satisfying career, to me, is defined by whether or not I can use my career as a means to assist others and experience a sense of accomplishment and self-gratification in helping others. The notion of a satisfying career was one that came through personal experiences. Being a former Medicaid recipient, I was thankful to those that worked in the public health sector to help those in need, including myself and my family. Through my past experiences, I felt obligated to reciprocate the resources and assistance that I had received. Dentistry is an area of healthcare that I feel extremely passionate about because access to proper dental care is limited, especially in the underserved communities. I can remember coming to school and hearing all my classmates talk about how much they hated going to the dentist. Going to the dentist was one thing that I have always loved to do. The sound of the tools and just the smell of the clinic was never a bad atmosphere to me, I actually enjoy the dentist. Laura was my first dental hygienist from as far back as I can remember, and she had the whitest teeth I have ever seen! I have honestly came to the conclusion that I am obsessed with teeth. It's important for any high school student to have an idea or plan of what they want to pursue in the near future. Most students want to go into the medical field, become a professional athlete, a lawyer, etc. Many talk about becoming a dentist, but not a dental assistant. Simply because they feel like it's not that big of a title of being a dental assistant as compared to a dentist. Little do they know dental assistants play a big role as well in the office. Thus, majority of Canadians receive oral health via privately owned dental clinics. Privately owned dental care gives these services providers control over dental service charges, types of available treatment for the patients and number of follow-up appointment for treatments or routine care. It gives me a sense of pride to reflect back and write about my adventure, where working hard and staying focused has made me the person I am today. Until now I have seized every opportunity I could to increase my knowledge, think critically about my field, to be a better student, a responsible professional and a humble citizen. I chose to become a dentist as being a child I had to visit a dentist many times for correction of malaligned teeth that i had. So my dentist who was also a specialist in the field of orthodontics inspired me deeply as it gave me a vague idea of how can i also bring smile and self confidence back to an individual by providing him with a competent smile again by incorporating the blend of my hand creativity and mental alertness, same as my dentist did for me thus returning me my self esteem and the confidence to smile again .Thus i found this field very satisfying and fulfilling.
