Dentists treat a variety of patients everyday from pediatric to elderly patients. Radiographs, although they exposure the patient to ionizing radiation, are essential to assess bone loss, carious lesions, impacted teeth, and other abnormalities that can not be seen clinically in an exam. According to an article by Johan Aps, since radiography is a crucial diagnostic tool during a complete dental exam, the dental radiographer should be cautious while dealing with radiation exposure by keeping in mind exposure justification, limitation, and optimization especially for children and their safety. For example, dentists who take radiographs no matter what at age five are exposing their patients to unnecessary harmful radiation that could be easily avoided if radiographs were taken based on diagnostic need only. Children are still growing and developing, and it is the clinician’s job to adhere to all radiation safety guidelines and methods. When dentists take radiographs at specific time or age intervals, the patient could complain and argue they are not being treated fairly. Healthcare professionals are required to treat every patient with justice and fairness. Hygienists could get in trouble with the dentist if they expose their patients to multiple unnecessary retakes exposing them to additional radiation. Even with the minute amount of radiation in dentistry, I think it is unlawful for patients to be unreasonably exposed without a rational diagnostic need. Patients do not always have as much knowledge about radiation as dental hygienists do, and they could get scared and leave the dental office if they think too many radiographs are being taken. They could subsequently tell their family and friends causing the office to lose valuable patients. Permanent cellular damage can occur because of radiation, especially in pediatric patients, if hygienists are not
