What is indifference? By definition, it means lack of interest, concern, or sympathy. Now, how is indifference dangerous you may ask? It is dangerous because it will always benefit the aggressor, never the victim. It makes the victim feel worthless and their life is meaningless. Indifference is more dangerous than anger or hate, it is a sin. Indifference will always benefit the aggressor, never the victim. Indifference is not having much feeling, so when the aggressor is being aggressive, they don't feel much. The victim is the one who will feel everything. For example when a bully is bullying another fellow student, they feel better about it or no feeling at all. The victim feels the shame, pain, everything there is to feel. Another example would be the Sandy Hook Shooting. The man who walked into a elementary school and starting shooting innocent people was an indifferent person. He didn’t have sympathy or concern for those who were shot, even for the children. …show more content…
Many times the victim wonders why they deserve to go through the bullying. They feel like nobody cares and is helping them, so they feel worthless or that they shouldn't be here. During WWll, when Germans were invading countries and taking prison, they treated the prison so badly until they didn't feel anything. The prisoners were diminished to nothing, until they didn't feel like they mattered or anyone cared about them. For me I was and still am bullied for being different. After so long of hearing the things people say about me, I believed them. I believed that no one cared about me or that I didn't belong here. I was spiraling into nothing and felt I had no
...es the world today, these people always choose ignorance over reason. Most people choose ignorance as a defence mechanism to stop thinking about these problems, they don’t realize that by doing that they are becoming more indifferent and they lose one of the most important traits that makes them human, compassion. Without compassion humans would become animals and the world we live in would become a jungle. As Edmund Burke warned “all that is needed for the triumph of evil, is that good men do nothing”, he warns the whole world that if they do not stand up for evil, it will win. Elie Weisle also explains “ The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference”, meaning that if the world does not stop their ignorance, and start to show compassion to one another , they might as well say goodbye to their precious world because it’s not going to be around for very long.
Indifference is lack of interest, concern, or sympathy or unimportance. Indifference has affected society and people in many different ways. In “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”, the theme of indifference is very prevalent.
The setting in both Lord of the Flies and I Only Came to Use the Phone contributes to the dehumanization of the characters in each of the readings. The settings are both isolated, which is the cause of all the chaos that takes place because when you take a human being out of the comfort of society, they go back to their natural animalistic tendencies in order to survive. Survival of the fittest is present in these quotes. Also, the island archetype plays a huge role in both of the stories.
“Lack of interest, concern, or sympathy” This is the very definition of indifference. Elie Wiesel once stated, “The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.” Wiesel’s statement relates to numerous civil rights movements. Why do these movements continue to thrive? The quote by Elie Wiesel, “Indifference to evil is evil,” still holds merit in the twenty first century as examined in Night by Elie Wiesel, Swing Kids directed by Thomas Carter and in Thirteen Reasons Why directed by Bryan Yorkey, and written by Jay Asher.
Many people do nothing to help those suffering in society. Some people continue leading their happy, privileged lives without any care about the less privileged, while others simply pity them and walk away, claiming that there is nothing they can do.
Getting ignored drastically decreases one's confidence which leads them to giving up and going to desperate measures to get noticed. It can also influence them into dropping out of certain activities such as their
The victim is able to remove him/herself from early bullying by resisting and is often able to return to the original job or find a new job.
Desensitization can be split into two different categories. These two domains can be categorized by emotion and cognition. According to Dr. Kostas Fanti, a psychologist and professor at the University of Cyprus, emotional desensitization is identified when a person reports a lower perception of the physical or emotional status of another. To best exemplify the emotional side of desensitization, one could look towards spectators of a public fight. These people can be considered desensitized because rather than showing empathy and stepping in to stop the fight, onlookers either apathetically cheer the fighters on, or simply watch without doing anything to prevent further injury. When a person
Does one try to talk to him, try and see what's bothering him, or does one decide that it's none of your business and continue your day as if one had never noticed his suffering in the first place. Is this phenomenon not uniquely prescribed to the human condition though? It seems that even a pack of animals would aid in their fellow creatures plight yet humans routinely choose to be apathetic to one another's suffering. It is this that WH Auden tries to capture and express in his poem “Musee des Beaux Arts” Auden has realized humanity’s apathetic nature towards fellow man's suffering for seemingly no reason and has chosen to convey to his readers his message regarding this gross indifference.
Bullying has been around for decades and yet it is still a reoccurring problem, and it is only getting worse. The National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2009, said nearly 1 in 3 students between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied in school. Eight years earlier, only 14 percent of that population said they had experienced bullying(Ollove,2014). There are two types of bullying the direct form and indirect form, in the direct form the victim receives physical harm example kicking pushing shoving. In the indirect form the victim receives emotional or mental harm by name-calling, rejection, gossip, threats, or insults(Green,2007). It doesn’t matter which way the victim was bullied it still causes
This is something common to modern day life and is far back as the beginning of mankind. Let’s look at a recent example of this in modern day life: In the news there was a video of a woman being raped on the beach during spring break. While this young lady was being raped and taken advantage of others were parting, videoing, and having a good time. In this situation something horrible was obviously happening to this young lady, but regardless the good times kept happening all around her. Some of the bystanders may be oblivious to what is happening, while others may see it and not care. While this may seem irrelevant after the fact, it’s a flaw in humanity that he noticed in 1938 when he wrote this poem. This flaw still exists today, I bet if he was in a crowded shopping mall today fell to the floor and clinched his chest, there would be some people that did not help. Some would be scared, others simply would not be paying attention, some will only care about themselves and not even give a second thought about it, and there will be someone that helps. While he is suffering across town there will be a party happening and no one will know about it. That was relevant then, and still is to this day. W.H. Auden knew this and summarizes it in just a few words in lines 13-14 he states; In Breughel’s Icarus, for instance: How everything turns away Quite
Bullying is an issue that has been happening for years now, this is a continuous issue. “The word “bully” can be traced back as far as the 1530s. (Donegan 33). In its most uncomplicated sense bullying involves two people, a bully or intimidator, and a victim. The bully abuses the victim through physical, verbal, or other means in order to gain a sense of superiority and power” (Donegan 33-34). Bullying can happen among school children up to adults. “Bullying ranks high on the list of the tremendous challenges facing kids” (Kevorkian). Although most people who are the bullies are stronger and is attacking the weaker. Intimidators may possibly abuse their victims verbally, physically, or psychologically. Bullying is an act of unwanted and aggressive
Many people in our world believe that they have the authority to determine someone else 's worth. In our society, people are being called degrading and horrible things constantly. This is known as bullying. Bullying is defined as unwanted or aggressive behavior towards an individual that is usually repeated over time. The way someone views themselves is important to their character and way of life. If a person is constantly told that they are "ugly" or "worth nothing", it might shape them into what they see in the mirror on a daily basis. Dark thoughts that result from bullying can lead to a dark way of life and even suicidal thoughts. Bullying should be a crime because it can lead to depression and suicide in some cases.
It only takes one bad experience to change your opinion on something. Imagine if you went through this same bad experience for months, or better yet years. Your whole personality, how you view yourself, and others changes drastically. This is what it feels like to be bullied. Bullying is a serious issue in America, especially among children and young adults. From kindergarten all the way up until my sophomore year of high school, I was a victim of bullying. Being bullied changed how I viewed myself and others, what my values and morals were, and it shaped me into the person I am today.
“If you’re oblivious to other people, chances are pretty good that you’re going to hurt them.” said William Deresiewicz who is an author and literary critic. His quote was proved it is correct in the story “The Way Up To Heaven” by Roald Dahl, originally published in the New Yorker. In one of the characters, Mrs. Foster, the author creates a sweet character (at first) but soon she switched into and oblivious and inconsiderate old woman who left her husband to die.
