“If you’re oblivious to other people, chances are pretty good that you’re going to hurt them.” said William Deresiewicz who is an author and literary critic. His quote was proved it is correct in the story “The Way Up To Heaven” by Roald Dahl, originally published in the New Yorker. In one of the characters, Mrs. Foster, the author creates a sweet character (at first) but soon she switched into and oblivious and inconsiderate old woman who left her husband to die. First of all, Mrs. Foster shows the readers that she is oblivious. Mrs. Foster was usually good to her husband, very patient and obedient with him. But on this particular day Mrs. Foster had a flight to catch to visit her grandchildren. Mr. Foster was an older man so he was a bit slower. His wife impatiently waited on him but she was in such a big hurry that she didn’t even care about the fact that he was stuck on the elevator even though she knew he was stuck, he was yelling for help. But the woman left him knowing that he would be stuck there for the next six weeks and he would die. Mrs. Foster reveals she is oblivious multiple times throughout the short story. Foster is completely inconsiderate. No questions asked. She also reveals this trait multiple times in the short story. For example, “I can’t wait for him, I simply can’t” and “certainly not! I was going to drop him at the club. It won’t matter.” Mrs. Foster said these things as if what Mr. Foster had to do did not matter. Mrs. Foster was being inconsiderate and only worried about herself. Not the mention that she already knew her husband was stuck and gonna die when she said those sentences. “She didn’t want to see her husband” is another example of inconsideracy. Mrs. Foster did not want to see her husband because she was only worried about herself and her flight. When she did get home she left Mr. Foster to die in the elevator.
