A man who is said to be the most talented novelist in human history is named Leo Tolstoy. He wrote many of the most famous and treasured novels including War and Peace, and Death of Ivan Ilych. He grew up in an extremely wealthy family but left the extravagant lifestyle to die as an alone homeless man. There are many reasons why people believe Tolstoy to be interesting, intriguing, and the single most prized novelist in the world. In his short novel Death of Ivan Ilych, Ivan pictures his death from afar and waits in pain as it slowly approaches. Within his last three days of life, he scream a constant howl. When approaching his death, Ivan realized that he had not lived a satisfying life. He was blessed with all of his many fortunes, but he figures out that materials are not all that mattered in life. He lived is life “wrong”. Ivan realizes that he should’ve done more activities that made him happy, and appreciate everything. Now that he had become ill, he noticed that all his fame and fortunes that were previously so important to him, were useless when in bad health. He didn’t have anything to send is money on or use because he was too sick to do so. His wife, and children are healthy and don’t want to be around him. The doctors who are healthy, neglect the true fatality of his illness. Because Ilych has been a very powerful man his whole life, he dislikes the feeling of being “unimportant” or “dramatic” in the eyes of his doctors. Ivan realizes that healthy people do not wish to be in the presence of those who are ill, due to the realization that they will not stay healthy forever. Healthy people do not want to be around the negative energy that is surrounded by illnesses, so they separate themselves. Ivan screams for seventy-two hours because he knows that no one else in the world can empathize for him, because no one can empathize for the dying. He recognizes that if the roles were reversed, he would treat an ill man the same way he is being treated by doctors, his friends, and his family.
