In “It Takes a Tribe” by David Berreby, he claims that humans are born with the urge to belong, and our experiences in life subconsciously shape who we are, placing us in groups. Berreby first provides examples of stereotyping and states how judging groups is a serious problem today, comparing it to prejudice and racism (par. 1-2). He moves forward to discuss how easily humans adapt to their surroundings and how this causes us to be placed inside these “exclusive” groups (par. 4-5). Berreby uses “college loyalty” and “school spirit” as examples of this, showing that colleges are the perfect place to study this behavior as they are strong comparisons to this behavior in the rest of the world (par. 8-9). Many people have trouble being apart of a society. These troubles come from trying to fit in, which is also known as conforming. Another trouble is trying to express one’s own style with one’s own opinion. This is a trouble due to the fact that many people have the fear of being frowned upon when being the black sheep of the group if one’s opinion does not correspond with other opinions. In the movie The Last of His Tribe, Scientist Kroeber has a different perspective of Ishi. Kroeber anticipates to take advantage of the amazing chance to learn the secrets of Ishi’s people. In the documentary, “The Wave”, the true story of an innocent classroom experiment is retold to demonstrated the intense power of obedience and conformity. There are three social messages that are communicated through the documentary. Firstly, the extreme power the will to conform can have over a large group of people. The way students so readily joined the new cult-like group, they would to do whatever it took to be part of “the wave”. Within this message was the second social message, being that this strong will to conform stemmed from everyone wanting to belong, or to feel apart of something. In Lewis study, he examines the segregation of college students within the framework of social energy theory. “I hypothesize that despite institutional claims of diversity, students will be segregated along racial lines” (Lewis 2011). To study the segregation of college students, he conducted a case study of “Southtown University”. Southtown University prides itself on being institution of higher learning that retain a high-level diversity. This study heighted segregation in several areas: students were racially segregated in their residence patters, their friendships, and the people they eat lunch with. The patterns of segregation are clear: blacks are most isolated from majority student culture, including both socially and residentially, followed by Hispanics who are not isolated residentially by fairly socially isolated.
