Cultural Appropriation

“ Celebration of the unfettered exploitation of the experiences of others,...” - Yassmin Abdul Magied. People abuse, cultural appropriation by using it to their own benefit. The abuse of cultural appropriation offends other races and disrespects their culture. The most heard viral appropriation is between whites and blacks. White people are the main race that uses cultural appropriation to benefit only themselves and for many other reasons. Cultural appropriation occurs in music, how people dress, and etc. Doing this gives people the question whether or not they just like the culture or if they’re using it for the wrong reason. While some people believe cultural appropriation allows people to celebrate cultures, it also offends other races;

“...such as blackface, 19th-century minstrel shows or ethnological expositions, which literally put indigenous people on display,often in cages”(Young).Appropriating cultures dehumanizes certain ethnic groups because of ethnological expositions. For example, minstrel shows put indigenous, black people, on display and dehumanized them and their culture. Ethnological Expositions dehumanize ethnic groups and their cultures. Therefore, this leaves people wondering why people love other ethnic groups cultures more than people in those ethnic groups.”What would America be like if we loved black people as much as we love black culture”(Avins).Appropriators tend to accept cultures more than they do ethnic groups. If appropriators loved cultures as much as ethnic groups, then cultural appropriation wouldn’t be a problem in America. Appropriators only use cultures from ethnic groups for their self-benefits which offends ethnic groups as much as the culture

Bruno’s 24K Magic song was accused of being appropriated. He might not have meant to do it on purpose but the point is that he still profited from the song. Most of people only appreciate cultures because they know they can profit off of them. Finally, people/ethnic groups not only steal cultures but rob themselves.”By idly standing by, we’re robbing ourselves of the chance to break free of the systematic racism that still lives on in our society”(Florio). Even though people see how cultural appropriation effects society, we as a society, still aren’t trying progress to stem away from it. We are not only stealing cultures but robbing ourselves from preventing further systematic and oppressing other ethnic groups. We, as a society, need to prevent systematic racism.

In addition, cultures were stole all throughout history because of dominant cultures colonizing other ethnic groups cultures.”Cultural appropriation has most commonly been used to reference acts in which aspects of colonized cultures are taken and used by a dominant culture”(Florio).Cultural appropriation oppresses ethnic groups while dominant cultures colonized cultures.
