For my final project I have chosen to analyze Blank Space and Bad Blood by Taylor Swift, which are singles from her album 1989 that was released in 2014. I selected these pieces primarily because I really like Taylor Swift and her music. I like really upbeat song, with very distinct and strong rhythm that are very catch, which is what a lot of her songs are. I also chose these songs because I feel like they are representative of modern popular music, at least to an extent. The change in pitch occurs mainly coming from Taylor’s voice. Due to this change in pitch of Taylor’s voice over the course of the song, while there is not a very wide range, there is definitely a range. In Bad Blood there is wide range because the pitch varies between high and low throughout the course of the song.
The tempo of blank space is very for most of song. About 3 minutes into the song the tempo slows down significantly but it speeds up after that. There is a recognizable rhythm throughout the song but it changes over the course of the song. There were a lot of percussion instruments utilized in this song. Among these instruments utilized are the piano and drums. The piano may also double as a string instrument. It also includes a saxophone and guitar. There are percussion instruments utilized in Bad Blood. There is a drum and a synthetic piano. Blank Space classifies as program music because there is an extra musical idea necessary to analyze these songs. In order to fully understand the song, you have to know that she is commenting on the media’s portrayal of her. The program is therefore her mocking the stories that are told about her in the press. This is realized through her incorporating in the song a lot of the things that she hears them say about her in the press. Bad Blood on the hand would not classify as a strophic song despite the fact that there is an extra musically needed to understand the song but Bad Blood has a music video that expresses this extra musical
