1. What is popular music?
Popular music is any music since industrialization in the mid-1800’s and is preferred by the middle class. It covers many genres such as rock, country, R&B, hip-hop, and rap.
2. What theme does pop music typically use in the lyrics? Describe one pop song that uses this theme. Why is this theme such a popular one?
Themes used in pop music are usually things that people can relate to. Most have to do with falling in love, breaking up, divorce, and other things pertaining to love. So Small by Carrie Underwood is an example explaining that as long as you have love other things seem so small or not to matter as much.
3. What is disco? What are the characteristics of this music?
Disco is a genre of music that became popular in the 1970’s. Some of the characteristics are getting people to dance with a beat of 100 to 130 beats per minute with a pulse of the rhythm. The vocals also soared and were highlighted. It was the dance music of the decade and brought many different people together.

As Glenn Altschuler, an acclaimed author and professor at Cornell University, quotes, “rock ‘n’ roll nonetheless provided a fresh perspective, celebrating leisure, romance, and sex, deriding deferred gratification… and delighting in the separate world of the teenager” . The rapid success of Rock and Roll spread from teenagers promoting up and coming artists, whether they were black or white, causing segregation to slowly dissipate and integration to come into play.
