My creative process begins with word association, whether it’s mind mapping or BDA (before during and after) techniques, using a word process spurs ideas and images that may not have presented themselves otherwise. Next, thumbnail drawings help expand the ideas and develop the mind map further. These sketches usually raise a question or two and thus begins my research phase. Whether it is product demographic research or a profile image of perhaps, a ram, to gain a better understanding of proportions, research also spurs alternate ideas while insuring they are not unknowingly copied from another source. Combining both the creative voice and artistic style goes hand in hand for a designer. Utilizing the creative voice to identify and solve the design query opens the opportunity for incorporating the artistic style into the development of the solution. Using these abilities along with open communication between the client and designer should yield results that fit the client’s needs appropriately. Personal artistic style is an artist’s or designers visual identity, and while it is important to remain versatile, or flexible with this style, perhaps even working outside of it when the situation is called for, it is essential to keep in mind that it is also an artist’s calling card and should not be discarded altogether when working on projects. Personal artistic style is the reason we build portfolios and that clients hire us, and it would therefore serve beneficial for a designer to find that balance of delivering what the client is asking for without losing the qualities in the design that makes it unique to you and your abilities. I believe that handling a project from a client that conflicts with my personal artistic style would be taken as a challenge and an opportunity to grow and develop my experience and skills further while bringing my own unique touches to the design by incorporating facets of my artistic style to distinguish it as a custom or original
