In the United States, the culture of maize includes uses for technology, agriculture, and medical needs but not for religious or spiritual purposes. On the other hand, Mexico uses maize for more religious and spiritual purposes. In the Mexican culture, Mexicans consider themselves the “children of corn” and worship three corn gods. Moreover, corn stalks were common patterns in ancient Mexican art. Older history of the significance of maize was found in a cave in Puebla, Mexican dating back 7,000 years. In today’s culture, people in Mexico rely on corn as a source of food and make use of every aspect of the stock such as using it for fuel and building materials. 24

When the Spanish migrated to the Americas during the colonial period, they had a particular food preference and attachment to wheat bread. Elite whites looked at corn as an uncivilized product, but the people of Mexico also remained hesitant to growing wheat. The introduction of wheat in Mexico began to be prepared as tortillas, since this was what the native women knew best to do. This tortilla discourse, as explained by Pilcher, “correctly recognized maize as the root of self-supporting communal life, and this a barrier to modernization, although for cultural rather than nutritional reasons. In the New York Times article “When a Crop Becomes a King”, author Michael Pollan argues there is an overproduction of corn that does more harm than it does good. He writes this in response to a farm bill signed by then President Bush to increase the budget for corn production which caused much controversy. Pollan uses an infuriated and frustrated tone in order to convince American consumers that corn has taken over their environment and economy. Explanation- This article gives examples of how indigenous people used to live before the colonization of Christopher Columbus. After the appearance of Christopher Columbus in Mexico different ethnic groups were distributed amongst different states along with their different languages. In the state of Oaxaca there around sixteen different ethnic groups which the Mixtecs and the Zapotecs are the two main ethnos who have continued to expand amongst the territory. During the Spanish conquest the Mixtec and the Zapotecs’ religion was mostly based on belief in the vital force that animated all living things, meaning that they worshiped the land and the creator. The Aztec’s were overthrown by the Spanish, yet we still haven’t forgotten the Aztecs. The Mayan civilization was located in southeastern Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula. One of the first American civilizations, it lasted from about 1000 B.C.-1542 A.D.
