For many people history is an important part of who we are, but as views change and arise is it still history or something more. The Confederate Flag has always been heritage of our history, but over time this has slightly shifted. The flag has also been a representation of intense racism that many racists still express and African Americans strongly oppose. The horrid actions of one man cause a mass dispute over the flag. To this day the debate continues over whether the flag should stay or go and what it truly symbolizes.
On June 17,2015 one man, Dylann Roof tipped already rocky balance between blacks and whites. He made the decision to go into Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina and shot multiple people. …show more content…

“ It is obvious that some racists have appropriated and desecrated the Confederate battle flag for their pathetic causes”(Jones) which blinds others to what was actually being fought for during the war. This is what historians see when the flag is presented. Some racists may be unaware that they are disgracing a symbolic part of the flag’s representation. The importance of the flag’s history has “become inextricably associated with ideologies that most Americans should find disgusting”(Crayton). The recent and past actions of contention have led to many deaths that afterwards have been associated with white extremists. “The defense of the Confederate flag as a mere historical object tells the black community that they are outside of society, and should fear attempts to be part of it.” The black community feels as though they are not fully apart of society, because there will always be something or someone that prevents it. The fact that this is a true is what we should pay attention to, not the fact that it is someone’s opinion. There needs to be a change but the flag is not the problem, the people are.
