In our contemporary civilization, literature plays an important and impacting role in our daily lives. Adapting to the different likes and tastes of modern day society, books and novels have different types and genres, all having in common the objective to please the reader and to convey morals and themes to the audience. In the 20th century were written 2 novels, The Chrysalids and Animal Farm, which will be compared and contrasted in the following essay, demonstrating the fact that they both target the general audience and not one particular group of readers. The comparison between both novels will be done via the contrast of specific literary elements such as the plot and the moods of the novels, the point of view of the narration and the style of the author, and also via the themes the authors try to convey to their audience through their literary work.
It is often the plot and the mood of a novel that will determine the type of audience and the group of readers the novel is targeting. In both novels, The Chrysalids and Animal Farm, the moods and the plots used by the authors target the general audience and are not restricted to a particular age group. In the novel The Chrysalids, which was written by John Wyndham and published by Penguin Books in 1955, readers are plunged in the suspenseful tale of a young group of telepathic teenagers living in a post-nuclear society. Throughout the novel, which takes place mostly in Waknuk, a township in Labrador, the group of young telepaths evades society due mostly to persecution and discrimination by fellow town members. Being true literary artworks, both novels, filled with suspense, intrigue and mystery, expose the true face of our society while conveying essential themes. In our modern society, literature and novels have an important and impacting role to play in our daily lives and in our personalities. They shape the face of our world and determine the values and morals society will adopt and conserve. In conclusion, as Muriel Rukeyser once said: “The universe is made up of stories, not atoms”, which also highlights the importance of literature in our lives.
In the novel Animal Farm and Movie Animal Farm there were many differences and similarities. In the book Animal Farm Old Major died peacefully 3 days later, after giving his speech, yet in the movie he was shot by Farmer Jones during his speech. In the movie Jessie was the protagonist and was always around, and in the book she was hardly mentioned. Another difference between the movie and novel is Clover, and Mr. Whymper were not mentioned in the movie. In the novel those characters played a crucial part in the story. Mr. Whymper would spread the news on how the animals were living, and Clover supported Boxer. The two novels, Animal Farm, written by George Orwell and The Sky So Heavy, by Claire Zorn explore the theme of oppression through characterisation. Animal Farm is a novella depicting the lead up to the Russian Revolution, with characters from the events taking part in the story as animals. In The Sky so Heavy, Finn and his peers are stranded in a nuclear winter, hopelessly trying to source food for survival. The characterisation of Napoleon in Animal Farm and Finn in The Sky So Heavy both portray similar oppression through their speech. Napoleon portrays oppression when he states, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” (90), similarly to Finn; “our world was made from the dull light filtered through the gauze
The balance of utopia, power, and the good life has been challenged throughout history and been shown in different stories, such as The Truman Show and Animal Farm. This balance is tough to achieve, and this is shown numerous times throughout both The Truman Show and Animal farm. Power, which is the ability to act in a particular way, is shown to be easily corrupted, utopia, which is a perfect society, is proved to be near impossible to achieve, and the good life, which is the life someone would want to live, is shown by different people at different times.
The purpose of any and all texts is to criticise our society, whether that criticism is found in a novel or a film. This is established in the Novella ‘Animal Farm,’ written by George Orwell and the film ‘V for Vendetta’ by James McTeigue. Both of these texts analyse the way society is managed and how the populations can permit this management.

Works of commercial fictions usually have an adventurous, action-oriented plot, making it popular for the audience because of its purpose to entertain. In contrast, literary fiction has elements that bear significance relating to our perception of the universe and humanity, thus targeting a smaller group of readers whose interest lies in the author’s technique and perspective on life. Richard Connell’s primary motive in “The Most Dangerous Game” is to fulfill the audience’s desires of a plot-driven, action-based story while Tobias Wolff’s “Hunters in the Snow” is structured to conform to the artistic elements of literary fiction.
Although the book was set in the 1930’s, it related to the 1990’s, and indeed still relates to 2014. It can be said that the influence of great writing can be substantial on the masses.
Like all books, Animal Farm the book, is different from Animal Farm the movie. One of the reasons is the characters. Some of the characters that were in the book were not in the movie. Those were characters like Mr. Whymper, Clover, and Mollie. In the movie, Jessie, the dog that was only mentioned in the first chapter, replaced Clover. Jessie narrated the story, was the main character, and was in the story the entire time.
Many novels contain a character who is placed in a situation that changes their development. The best or worst of their personality can emerge, as well as their attitude towards those around them. Crucibles can be individual tests and are noticeable in most literary pieces. Commiting a sin or allowing yourself to have all the power in a community, can cause a crucible in your life, or in a fellow individual’s life. In The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible, and Animal Farm , the protagonists experience a situation that alters their perspective of themselves and others.
It was was a dark night, all the animals huddled around Old Major to hear what he had to say about his dream. It turns out Old Major talks about rebelling against man so that all animals can have a better life. Ironically, after Rebellion, no one except Napoleon has a better life and he makes their lives even harsher. This is a story of communism, this is the story of Animal Farm.

Animal Farm Book and Movie Animal Farm is a novel about farm animals running a farm and becoming self sufficient. It is a story with great detail and is a very good book to read because of it surprising events. If you have seen Animal Farm the movie, you would feel completely different. The movie has far less detail and events to make it as interesting as the book. Though the story is basically the same, the lack of details makes the movie dull.

Most directly one would say that Animal Farm is an allegory of Stalinism, growing out from the Russian Revolution in 1917. Because it is cast as an animal fable it gives the reader/viewer, some distance from the specific political events. The use of the fable form helps one to examine the certain elements of human nature which can produce a Stalin and enable him to seize power. Orwell, does however, set his fable in familiar events of current history.
One cannot deny the fact that the novel is now considered a distinguished literary form, and is the only literary medium through which a writer can discuss a host of problems, which are brewing in the contemporary society. Novel emerges as a powerful medium to present the age in a descriptive and analytical manner. It represents the social, political, cultural and historical growth of society at a great length. The impact of the novel on the society is significant.
