The play “West Side Story” was like a modern version of “Romeo and Juliet”. Although “Romeo and Juliet” was older, it had many similarities with “West Side Story” and shared some major themes such as feud, love, and being true to yourself. The characters in the plays were also alike. For example Romeo and Juliet were equivalent to Tony and Maria. Even though the plays “West Side Story” and “Romeo and Juliet” were based on the same idea, they had numerous differences. An important similarity between “Romeo and Juliet” and “West Side Story” is that two people from opposing sides fell in love with each other. Romeo was a Montague and Juliet was Capulet. One night at a party, Romeo and Juliet saw each other and they fell in love immediately. They were inseparable and wanted to spend every minute with each other. But their families hated each other and didn’t support their relationship. In the 1960s there were two gangs in the West Side of Manhattan. It was the Jets who were Irish and Italian and the Sharks who were Puerto Rican. Tony was a member of the Jets and Maria was part of the Sharks. One day at a dance, Tony and Maria set eye on each other and it was love at first sight. They wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. But they belonged to two gangs who strongly disliked each other. Maria’s friend Anita didn’t support her relationship with Tony. Anita told Maria that Tony only wants one thing and he will leave her lonely. Both Tony and Maria and Romeo and Juliet faced criticism about their relationships.
