Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story have many differences and similarities. Characters such as Chino and Count Paris are very similar. There are also many similar events like their rumble. However, there are some differences in the scenes such as the tomb scene.There are many similarities and differences in West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet.
First, Chino and Count Paris are very similar in both the book and the movie. They both want to marry the character Juliet, but she despises both of them. Both Anita and Bernardo want Maria to stay with Chino which is just like the play. Chino also hates Toni and tries to kill him in the movie just like the play. Chino and Count Paris have many similarities in both West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet.
As it is with any work that is based on something else, it is the differences as well as the similarities that make both the original and the inspired appealing. Paramount aspect of the movie and the play, the theme, were the same, and the overall messages in both were the same. For example, one main message in the stories was that love conquers all. This was demonstrated in both the play and the film when Romeo and Juliet kept secretly meeting each other even though they knew it was against their families’ wishes. In one scene of both the movie and the play Romeo and Juliet even got married and died together so that even if they could not be together on earth they would be together in death.
The differences are more abundant than the similarities. One of the big differences is that Romeo is very outgoing, daring and breaks a lot of rules for love, for example “'Tis but thy name that is my enemy; Thou art thyself, though not a Montague...Alack, there lies more peril in thine eye Than twenty of their swords: look thou but sweet, And I am proof against their enmity.” (Act 2 Scene 2). This shows that he is breaking many rules like the fact that their families are enemies and are not to talk also he is in her back lawn where he could be caught and killed. On the other hand Paris is very mature and follows all the rules of society. He asks Juliet’s father for her hand in marriage, but Romeo just married her without telling anyone. The second difference is Romeo is very immature, you can tell this because he was in love with Rosaline, but he went to the party and completely forgot about Roseline when he meet Juliet. Paris has loved Juliet throughout the whole book from the moment Lord Capulet asked him about Juliet to the death of Juliet and himself. This shows how he is more mature and sure about his love for Juliet. Although the families hate one another, Gnomeo/Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight. However, they were forced to sneak around to meet each other because of the tension between both families. The movie Gnomeo and Juliet, presents a similar idea of the story of Romeo and Juliet. In brief, while there are some notable differences between both versions of Shakespeare’s classic, it is without a doubt, that the essence of the story line remains the same; the tale of two star-crossed lovers.

Personality is what sets everyone apart, Juliet is played by three different actresses, but all three portray the personality in different and unique ways. But what makes Juliet, who she is, her actions towards her reckless love for Romeo. This is portrayed in Romeo and Juliet towards the beginning of the book, where their love at literal first sight is portrayed in a positive light and towards the end of The Three Questions, where the theme is treated as a wise lesson that the main character experienced first hand during his quest to find answers. In both of these sections of these two stories, the main characters both act on impulse, and from it, gain something. In the case of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo forgets about Rosaline and moves on from his depression and Juliet finally finds someone that she finally loves. In the case of the Three Questions, the king not only learns the answer to his three questions, but avoids being assassinated as well. Though despite how both stories are similar in how they portray the theme in a good light, they also both portray the same theme in a bad light at one point too. Both stories, at one point, portray impulsiveness as the wrong decision, especially when it is related to misunderstanding or revenge. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, due to the misunderstanding of the plan that Juliet set up, Romeo hastily killed himself, causing Juliet to kill herself, which placed a heavy weight on everybody they’ve known. In The Three Questions, the assassin, who had misunderstood the king and his actions, rose up to kill him out of rash revenge. This act almost gets him killed, and he is barely saved by the king himself. The main reason for romantic tension in these two plays is because the two couples can’t be together like they want to be. It is very easy to spot these differences considering the time period each movie was set in. There are some things in the play that totally got cut from both movies. The play and the musical compliment each other well, with one showing how love is both a creative and destructive force, and the other on showing how people should live their lives how they want to live them. The West Side Story adaptation of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet contains many differences from the original play, including Juliet’s strength being portrayed differently, the replacement of family hatred for the hatred of peers, and the easing of the seriousness of their relationship.
