Comparing How Do I Wish To Go? and Let Me Die A Youngman’s Death by
Roger McGough
‘How do I wish to go’ and ‘Let me die a Youngman’s death’ is showing
an example of two poems of similar content being entirely different.
This essay is going to compare and distinguish those similarities and
differences between these two poems. First, I will talk about the
similarities, then, I will move on to discuss the differences.
An easy first similarity is the contents of both poems. Both poems are
discussing the ways of how people want to die. The similarity is
already observable from the title itself. In ‘How do I wish to go?’ it
is separated into 4 stanzas, in which each stanza is talking about
different situations of people dying. However, ‘Let me die a
Youngman’s Death’ produces 5 stanzas, in which he describes three
situations of when, where and how he wants to die. In addition, it
also mentions some ways of how he doesn’t want to die. Another
similarity is that the poem is set in the 1st person voice. This is
shown throughout the whole of both poems. (‘Flames gripping my skirt’,
‘I achieved my final goal’ from ‘How do I wish to go?’ and ‘when I’m
73’, ‘give me a short back’ from ‘Let me die a Youngman’s death’)
Because the topic of death is very personal and up close, this
signifies that these poems are very personal. It creates an effect so
that the reader would believe the poem even more. If the poem had been
written in 2nd or 3rd voice, the poem may have an atmosphere of
misunderstanding and confusion. A lot of people will be left not
knowing whether the author is talking of good or bad to the person.
The 1st person makes it clearer and more believable. The third and
final similarity of this essay is that there is no rhyme scheme in
both poems. This creates the effect that the poems are not too
organized. This builds up so that the reader will know that a lot of
input and thought was put into the poem and the words weren’t forced
to be there, but instead was chosen wisely by the author. However, it
is also important to note that despite both poems being a bit
disorganized, it is also found that ‘Let me die a Youngman’s death’ is
more disorganized than ‘How do I wish to go’. This will be discussed
in the next paragraph. The above three points were similarities
between the two poems. There are many more similarities that can be
What I had wanted as a child, what I thought would have gotten, is all outside my grasp. That house I wanted? Maybe a bit smaller…and about that car, I’ll take a Honda Civic. I am now forced into the dilemma of choosing which dreams to fulfill. Even then none of them might come to be. I still seek to attain my goals however, but with all due diligence will I attain half-success. What I found didn’t fit with what I sought to be. What I was promised and what I believed will not come to be. I was once jubilant over the inevitability of adulthood, but now, all I seek is the impossibility of another
In "Killings"by Andre Dubus and In the Bedroom, directed by Todd Field, the author and director decided to go different directions with the beginning of the story, keeping the plot of the story almost identical. However, beginning the story differently impacted both works in completely different aspects. Dubus begins the story at the funeral of Frank which leads the reader to draw conclusions about what happened before Frank's funeral, while Field’s gives more background to viewer which allows the reader to make more connections. Dubus begins the story at Frank’s funeral which leads the reader to become confused throughout the story. As the reader reads through the story, they have to be able to connect the dots to understand what is happening. While in the movie, Field’s begins with the backstory leading up to Frank’s death which makes it easier for the viewer to understand what is happening. The difference between the two stories impacts how the reader and viewer are able to interpret the story.
Hospice is an album that reflects the themes: loneliness, emotional abusive, love, and death. While It mainly narrates the tale of a deteriorating relationship that include a terminally ill patient and a hospice worker, it also tells a true story of The Antlers’ lead singer, Peter Silberman’s past abusive relationship, which then drove him to create this piece of art. The themes begin to emerge as you get to the second track, “Kettering”, where the hospice worker gets the confirmation that there was no helping his suffering and moribund girlfriend
Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" and Catherine Davis' "After a Time" demand comparison: Davis' poem was written in deliberate response to Thomas'. Davis assumes the reader's familiarity with "Do Not Go Gentle," which she uses to articulate her contrasting ideas. "After a Time," although it is a literary work in its own right, might even be thought of as serious parody--perhaps the greatest compliment one writer can pay another.
Introduction: Michael Jordan once said, "Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen." What this quote means to me is that anyone can want and wish, but if you really want something you will try your best, and work hard for it. Three things I hope to accomplish before I leave plant earth are: be successful in life, be more confident, and help patients with cancer.
Many music artists choose to express themselves through songs for issues such as domestic violence and similar problems. ‘Family Portrait’ written by Pink and ‘Misery’ written by Maroon 5 are both songs that successfully reflect the issues of domestic violence throughout the pieces. ‘Family Portrait’ is a song written by pink in 2001 about a broken family and a little girl’s emotional plead for her mother and father to not leave each other. In line 4, the lyrics reflect the violence in the little girl’s house. As the song continues, in lines 9, 10, 11 and 12, it has become so deeply influenced by her mother and father. In lines 22, 23 and 24, the lyrics reflect the little girl’s attempts to escape the violence. The little girl repeats herself of the phrase “it ain’t easy growin’ up in World War III to symbolise the chaos in her house. ‘Family Portrait’ is an excellent representation of a household manifested with domestic violence. ‘Misery’ is a song written by Maroon 5 in 2010 is a more recent song about domestic violence. This song displays the themes of remorse and regret from the male role which is evident through the entire song. In lines 3 through 11, the lyrics metaphorically represent the emotional cuts that are left by one another. Later through lines 25 to 29, the lyrics talk about regret and giving up. The lyrics “so let me be” are mentioned twice to show remorse for the father’s past. These
It is well recognized that rock songs often express the issues society faces in regards to defying convention. When you analyze the lyrics, these artists are portraying a storyline that most listeners can relate to, due to previous or current experiences. For example, Suicidal Tendencies “Institutionalized”, tells a story that all individuals can relate to, considering we all went through those gruesome teenage years.
... sung at the funeral of the Princess of Wales resounded worldwide in a shared sense of loss. In whatever style, music is the closest we come to expressing the inexpressible and often surpasses the limits that words cannot bridge and draws the participant closer to the spiritual sense of self-awareness as well as realising the intricacy and intimacy of shared experience and harmony with the other.
To kill or to let die – What would you choose? You are standing on a platform at a train station. An out-of-control train carriage is coming down the track past the platform, there are three workers repairing the same track further down the line. They don’t have time to get out of the way of the carriage, the only way to save them would be to push the very large person next to you down the track, the person’s body will act to halt the train thus killing him but saving the three workers. Both options seem morally wrong then again we only have two choices and in this case I would rather standby than push the large person.
Don’t be disappointed. I gave up finally, but on the contrary all I ever wanted was a reason to persevere. All I ever wanted was to really live, but I didn’t know how. I just couldn’t find it. That purpose and meaning eluded me.
A man dies. His community's culture deems that he be buried in holy ground lest the community suffer some catastrophe. He, having always been at odds with his community on this point, has left a provision in his will that he be cremated and his ashes scattered into the ocean. The body waits in the hospital while the community debates the issue. What is to be done?
Grief is a very horrible and sad feeling and often is caused by lose of something or someone important to someone. In the story “always a motive” by Dan Ross and the song “Tears in heaven” both protagonists had lost a son at some point in their past and convey their feeling of grief in their own ways. Dan Ross shows that his character is hurt very badly because of his son’s death and tries to get away from it. Eric Clapton deals with his grief by expressing it in a song to his son trying to reach to the other side asking questions that cannot be answered. Both of these pieces of literature convey a feeling of helplessness and desperation.
... to pass on, singing “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just as before.” This showed an acceptance of what was inevitable. After David was discharged from music therapy, he had passed on a week later. This study demonstrates the power of music therapy with association to grief and mourning. The song choices helped to promote a communication between the husband and wife, and the neurologically impaired David was able to sing words that he was unable to express on his own. (Bailey, 1984). The power of music is incredible, and has the ability to say what we are unable to.
At the beginning and again at the end of "I Never Sang for My Father," we see a grainy snapshot of an old man and a middle-aged man, arms thrown about each other's shoulders, peering uncertainly into the camera as if they're not quite sure what drew them out into the sunshine to pose this day. And we hear Gene Hackman's voice: "Death ends a life. But it does not end a relationship."
I can’t simply say that I want these goal to happen in the future. I have to make them happen. With my goals in my mind, I work my hardest and give it 100% of my effort. In order for me to be at the top I have to start from the bottom. What I mean by that is, I can’t walk into a job with no experience. I would like that, but it simply doesn’t happen that way. There are so many things that I wish would just fall upon my lap, but realistically I know those things I will not be handed to me. They are things that have to be earn. That is why I decided to go back to school because I know that in life you have to earn the things you want. I am here to earn my degree in psychology- mental health and use it to help change the stigma of mental health. If I have learned one thing already its, there is nothing to be ashamed
