John Dickinson wanted to remain loyal to Great Britain and oppose independence because he felt that England had given a lot and supported the American colonies since they started. The people considered themselves British and strived to keep their British tradition and ways, so to split for Britain itself would make it seem like they were choosing to change their identity. He also felt that the colonies would begin to fight against one another. The different colonies all had different ideas of living.
