World War I and World War II were wars fought away from home, but still made a large impact on the people at home. Both wars required a lot of men fighting against the enemy forces, and because of that a lot of supplies were needed in order to sustain the soldiers. This meant that many people at home were heavily impacted by the need of human and natural resources. Specifically how the minorities were affected and what role they played in both the world wars. Many of the minorities faced racial prejudices during this time period, but this did not some of them from wanting to fight for their country. World War I the majority of soldiers fighting in World War I were white. But that soon changed as African Americans saw this as an opportunity to not only fight for their country, but also to finally win the respect of the white community. Throughout the war communication had always been a problem, until Phillip Johnston created a secret military code from the Navajo language. The code was used by the Navajo Code Talkers in the war, and they would translate Navajo words into english, then use the first letter of the english words to make out the words. This new code was so significant to the war that even Major Howard Conner who was the Fifth Marine Divisions Officer stated, “Were it not for the Navajo Code Talkers, the marines never would have taken Iwo Jima.” This was obviously a major part of the war and the language that helped achieve it was rooted deep in the culture of the Native American people.
