Ancient Greece was home to two of the most influential cities of its time, Athens and Sparta. Athens was known for its thinkers, art, and architecture while Sparta was the “warrior’s society”. While both cities ended tragically, they were successful for an extended period of time. This could be attributed to their forms of government. In Athens, the power was in the hands of the people in what is now known as a democracy. Sparta went the way of militarism, pursuing military policy. Another difference was the way they treated their women. Given different forms of government, Athens and Sparta were successful in their time.

It has been said Athens was a democracy and Spartan was an oligarchy. While this is true, Sparta had some aspects of a democracy in the sense that men of the council are elected by the people. In both governments there were councils, although the number of council members differed both had the same purpose, and act as judges. In both cases you also see assemblies. Both assemblies were comprised of the citizens, had the power to speak up, and pass laws. While in Spartan society women weren’t considered the husband's property their husbands did have some power over them. Women were assigned to men showing that even if they were labeled as property they still belonged to the husband. In both cities, women participated in religious events. The biggest similarity of the roles of women was providing offspring. The role of women above anything else was that women needed to produce strong and healthy babies.
