There are commonalities between crime prevention and community policing. Crime prevention and community policing can be similar, but they can also be different. Let’s take a look at the definitions of each of these:
Crime prevention is defined as “a pattern of attitudes and behaviors directed both at reducing the threat of crime and enhancing the sense of safety and security to positively influence the quality of life in our society and to help develop environments where crime cannot flourish.” (Peak & Glensor, 2012, p. 84). Community policing is defined as “the building of problem-solving partnerships between the police and those they serve.” (Peak & Glensor, 2012, p. 47). The specific relationship between crime prevention and community policing is they are “attempting to define a problem, identify contributing causes, seek out the proper people or agencies to assist in identifying potential solutions, and work as a group to implement the solution.” (Peak & Glensor, 2012, p. 88). This means that both crime prevention and community policing are pretty much all about getting the same things done to help stop crime. The better they are at working together to help reduce crime, the better that they will succeed. Second-generation CPTED is a program that looks into how neighborhoods affect the ability of a safe community. This aspect focuses on the neighborhoods and how they work. They look at things like the size of the districts, urban meeting places, and youth clubs. Areas that have youth clubs are less likely to have a lot of youth crime.
