Community Oriented Policing Research Paper

Community-oriented policing can be described as a collaboration between the police and the community that identifies and solves community problems (Thayer & Reynolds, 2002). With the police, no longer the sole guardians of law and order, all members from the community become active allies in the effort to enhance the safety and quality of neighborhoods. However, it should be noted community-oriented policing is mostly targeting those criminal activities that are considered minor such as those of issues of drugs and juvenile delinquency. The effectiveness of the programs has come into question in the recent past. This paper is going to suggest various strategies and approaches that would help the organization meet their goals and how the community-oriented

This will make the members of the community to try to abide by the law and avoid minor offenses such as juvenile delinquency among others. This can also include training the members from the community on the various ways of solving problems other than involving the police. For example, those children who engage in criminal offenses can be handled by members from the community in a way that can help them stop engaging in such criminal

There are various ways in which the involvement with the youth can be increased in regard to this. One of the ways in which youths can be involved more is through making them part of the process in the first place (Heuett, 2007). The community-oriented policing has always been about the elderly in the society being viewed as the caretakers of the community. This has made the youth to feel excluded in the whole process. Therefore, youths should also be enjoined in the discussions, training and education regarding community-oriented policing. This way; they will start ensuring that community-oriented policing help solves the problems affecting the youth and the other young people like children. Since community policing is all about solving problems rather than seeking punishment meant for the criminal wrongdoers, the youth can be involved more by giving them the opportunity to teach the ones that have gone astray how to live a good and respectable
