Issues such as increasing student diversity, fiscal problems, and identifying accountability measures have continued to plague all areas of higher education (Laanan, 2001). As community colleges continue to increase their status in higher education, the federal government is continuing to identify polices and legislation that will aid in their overall growth and sustainability. The federal government has played a significant role in community colleges by providing funding, polices and legislation that force community colleges accountability.
Community colleges have become an essential role in higher education because of accessible and affordable education that they provide. In the 21st century, community colleges leaders must ensure that they are abreast of polices and trends that place a direct effect on their foundation. Community colleges are continuously on the rise of being a vital piece of higher education and globalization. While the thought of higher education may be achievable to many students, the price of attending college may make that goal unattainable. As stated by Goldrick-Rab, Harris, Mazzeo, and Kienzl (2009) the gap between the economic structure amongst the rich and the poor has led to the inability for many students who would like to attend college.
The ongoing debate on the usage of Pell Grants, restoration of funding, and other awards has forced lawmakers to create polices that will help students and not have a daunting effect on the stabilization of the government. In order to remain aware of these issues, leaders have to remain vigilant in regards to federally funded programs and the requirements that students must maintain to continue receiving funding.
