Determination is a quality that makes a person continue to try, to do, or to achieve something that is difficult. It is a person’s overall drive to never give up and continue striving towards a desired goal. If I was asked to describe myself in one word, I would choose determined. Throughout my life I have had many experiences where my determination has helped me fight through tough times. By having this quality it has helped me to win a girls bowling IHSA state title, be an all-state athlete, and also continue my goals for my education. Determination is important to me because I need it to achieve my goals and reach my highest potential. Determination starts with the decision to go for the goal and to make the commitment to attain the goal. Determination is also the continuous driving force to overcome the obstacles on the way to the destination. It focuses the mind on the end result. It strengthens the will to carry on, to arrive at the destination.
Determination, in simpler terms, is not giving up.

One goal that it has allowed me to achieve was a high school team state champion title for bowling in February of 2015. Our team’s journey to state started off needing to place in the top 4 at the high school regional. I was really proud of my team members because we kicked off a huge first place win to advance to sectionals the following weekend. At sectionals we did the same thing. We placed first, which set us up for a trip to state. I was amazed at the young talent level that we had and our potential to win a state title. While at state we set three different goals. The goals included a state record for the score of three games, a state record for the score of six games and a state record for one game. Individually I placed second out of 77 total competitors. State is set up by having twenty four high school teams from around the state bowl twelve total games; six games on Friday and six on
There are many crucial elements college students must have in order to obtain success. The most valuable aspect of self-improvement for a college student to have starts with grit. Grit can be obtained through keeping one’s goals in mind, sticking to a schedule, and staying resilient to animosity. Grit is defined as using perseverance and passion for the goals one has. Someone with grit has courage, resolve and a strong character. Try to picture a person clenching their teeth while faced with a difficult tack, yet they conquer it anyway.
Determination, the strive to come out on top. The compulsion to reach your goal. For me, failure is not an option. Being adequate is not one either. You either have your game face on or you do not. There is no in between. My goal at the moment is to become a student at the Early College. From then on, I have multiple goals set up
People have all different kinds of values, wants, needs, long-term goals, and short-term goals. Their differences come from many places such as religion or age. These differences are what makes each individuals values, wants, and needs make them unique to each person individually. My values, wants, needs, long-term, and short-term goals are all unique to myself.

At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
I have always had a passion to learn. My interest is in political theory and economics, hoping someday to become a lawyer and stateswoman. I realize that in order to reach any of these goals, a college degree is vital. When I in turn reach my goals, I will use them to encourage and uplift my community by investing my time, money, energy, and influence to become a stepping stone for others.
Success can be measured in multiple ways, depending on the person and on the circumstances. I entered into the accelerated nursing program with the goal of successfully completing the required courses and ultimately becoming a successful nurse. For my team the end goal was to be the best in the state and prove that by winning the state championship. My junior year we were extremely close to that goal, but came up short. What’s important is finding the motivation to go the extra mile and persevere through hardships. Motivation is what we needed for my senior year and we pushed as hard as we could. Motivation is defined as the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviours. Motivation is what causes us to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge. I feel a bit lost if I do not need to go to school weekly, and I cannot believe that only 4 credits short of finishing my MSA degree. I have been enjoying the learning process that enables me to interact with professors and my classmates for the past year and a half. This is one of the milestones that encourage me continually keep my hard efforts to reach my goal, being a CPA. To be clear, my goal has never been changed. Persistence is more important than ability to determine a person’s success. When there is a person who wants to do their goal or task they have to be able to work hard for their goal, they need to be dedicated to the goal, and no matter what happens they can’t give up which means that they have to keep going and going until they have finally achieved what they wanted to achieve. So this shows that a great successor needs to be very persistent to achieve and go beyond what they want to do, they need to drive themselves to success, but most of all they need to be patient and have time.
Success, is a term with relative meaning depending on what aspect of life it is associated with. I view success in terms of achievements, fulfillment, and accomplishments. I set goals, and I do what it takes to make them happen, by dedicating my time, intelligence, skills to achieve them. I make sure that at the end of the day I can be proud of my work, knowing that I invested myself a hundred percent. Goals are a very important aspect of life, they are like maps that guides you, because if you do not know where you are going, how would you know when you get there. All aspects of my life are intertwine, and accomplishing something in my personal life have repercussion on how I feel in my professional life, and vice versa. I do not measure success on the size of my bank account, the size of my house, or what kind of car I drive, but instead I assess how happy and filled my life is.
