Recommended: Should NCAA athletes receive compensation

This year, 2017, Lebron James will make 31.1 million just from basketball this year. What about North Carolina NCAA basketball team for winning the championships? What about Alabama winning the NCAA football championships? Should college athletes be able to make money? Would they be able to handle it? This is a huge topic on whether college athletes should get paid. Due to National College Athletic Association, college athletes are not allowed to receive any compensation or endorsement while participating in college athletics. In 2013, survey expert John Dennis found that 69% of the public is opposed to paying student- athletes (Martinez). Amatuer players recieiving compensation just seems like a complete disaster. They don’t know how to manage their money, and there wouldn’t be anywhere to guide their financial decisions (Lemmons). Many student athletes are already receiving scholarships and other benefits, and this would also detract from the purity of the game (Patterson). If salaries were given, then these student-athletes would have to pay taxes, which can add up to a whole bunch of money for these young students (Martinez). This would be a problem between players, due to one teammate potentially receiving more money (Lemmons). This would be too difficult, and there are some who say professional athletes do not play as hard because they have already made it to the highest level and are receiving money (Patterson). Cash or a salary could be spent on wants rather than necessities, potentially leading the athletes into a debt they do not have with the benefit of a scholarship (Martinez). They will lose the hunger and passion that we see in college, which is why a lot of people like college better than professional (Lemmons). If payments are involved, athletes would be incentivized to commit to the college or university with the highest offer, but now they may transfer in the middle of the year or at the end just because they want more money. Also in college, it’s not their job to play sports, it’s an extracurricular activity that is pursued while pursuing a higher education.
