College athletes drive college popularity and nationalism. Every year hundreds of scholarships are given out to male and female athletes of all sports. These scholarships pay for tuition, room and board, and meal plans. College athletes have most, if not all of their college paid for. Never have college athletes been given a paycheck for their participation in a colligate sport. Over the last few years, some people feel the need for college athletes to be paid with the money they make from advertisements and revenue, brought in from holding an athletic event. Others say that college athletes should not be paid due to the fact that they are rewarded a scholarship paying for their college education. College athletes should not be paid because they are rewarded free tuition, and student athletes learn the values of amateurism.
College athletes preform in front of paying crowds and the money the crowds pay to watch goes to the college. The college uses the money to help better the athletic department. The athletic department has many different options with what they can do with the money. They are able to put the money into the scholarship fund or use it to buy new equipment. Many colleges also use the revenue to recruit incoming players. “Division I teams often spend large amounts of money recruiting the best players and coaches. Although players are not paid, they are often given athletic scholarships to attend college” (Cline). There really is no need to pay college athletes since they are given scholarships. Some people argue that they need personal expense money. While this may be true, college athletes do not have the expense of college like other students who are paying for both college and personal expenses.

They want the athletes to be rewarded for the hard work they put in and for how much money they are making for the University. While all of this may be true, the true meaning of playing a sport in college is more than about money or fame, it is about the true love for the game.
While the country is split in weather or not to pay college athletes, they should not be paid. College athletes arrive on a scholarship that pays there way through college. They have very little expenses they have to pay for. College sports have always been amateur because the real reason athletes play sports is because of their true love for the game. Overall, nothing can compare to being able to say I played a sport in college, and weather or not they got paid they will remember it for a lifetime.
