As a student with severe hearing loss, I grew up learning to adjust to different situations that many students did not. I had to work harder than others to succeed. Because of my severe hearing loss, I turned into someone who wasn’t afraid to ask for help. I learned how to express myself and I have become more versatile in difficult situations. Despite seeming out of place and requiring additional assistance that my peers did not, I was never discouraged. I always focused on trying harder and doing more in order to succeed. My passion for knowledge and personal development allowed me to overcome any obstacles and embrace the differences and difficulties in my life. As I grew older, I learned how to succeed, not only in class, but outside of this setting. My personal outlook has translated into my extracurricular activities and into my community. I always strive to do my best and at the same time, encourage my teammates to possess a similar attitude. When I play, I work to advocate for my teammates to do better, to try harder, and to work together. As a result of my efforts, I was named the “Most Inspirational Player” for volleyball. This award is given to student athletes who encourage their teammates to persevere despite the circumstances. It is earned by athletes who are constantly striving to do better, who never give up, and who inspire others.
