I am entirely empathetic. Empathy is the attribute of my character, which allows me to be patient with children, compassionate with strangers, and passionate in my pursuit of systemic injustice. I truly believe compassion will equip me to be a wonderful teacher and leader; however, it is also one of my greatest concerns. I need to learn emotional boundaries, as I am one to give my heart away. Already I am learning the need to process the circumstances, and comments shared with me by the sweet students I am currently serving. I cannot even begin to fathom the level of brokenness I will be entering into as a corps member, if selected. So with that in mind, I have been wondering how may I change my mindset? How may I set healthy boundaries?
I believe that it is the responsibility of every student who has received an education in a state school to give something back to the state. This state contains many institutions that offer curricula of quality primary education and is home to several above-average secondary or college institutions as well. Students who receive the state's gift of education should show their gratitude by using that knowledge to improve their community.
Helen Keller was one of the most successful people in the world. She helped in so many ways to change many people's lives. She was a very humble person despite her successes. I want to tell you about a story I read which touched me and shows what a special person Helen Keller was.
One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd." I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. They really should get a life." He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him.
One of my biggest challenges is to separate my personal feelings from the client. There are times where I get my emotions too involve when my clients specially when working with children. During the Panhandle Promise Project Summer Camp, I had the chance to meet and talk to the children in the program. I deeply care for this children and their living situations, knowing that some of this children are in foster care or are living in poverty make me sympathize and involved personal feelings. This also impacts the boundaries that need to be set with the children and me because involving myself too much in their lives will not be healthy for either one. All of my life I have been a city girl, but I moved to Santa Rosa when I was about 13. Up until I was about 16, I lived there permanently. I used to switch back and forth from parent to parent all of the time. When I first started high school, I went to Piner High and, in my junior year, I went to Montgomery and, from there, to a continuation school. I am currently now back at Piner. I had to basically kick and scream to get back into my regular high school--as you can see there is some drama behind the scene.
I started high school with a broken heart. My father died when I was 13, not long before I started high school. I worked hard in school not only for him, but because working hard is who I am. He taught me that if you want something you have to go out and get it yourself and what I wanted to do was go to college. I have put myself through a lot in just this past year alone, applying for scholarships nonstop and earning my license so I can finally get a job. I want to be a successful, responsible person so I can make my father, wherever he is, proud of how far I was able to come after he was gone. Yes I’ve gone through a tragedy, but I’ve let it motivate me in a positive way, pushing me to be the best I can be.
As a student, I know that we are the future for society to thrive on. We are told again and again that the knowledge we gain will further ourselves into the world, and for our college, there are rights and responsibilities us students must follow to maintain a working community for other students, teachers, and staff. To ensure a healthy and happy college experience, we must earn the same equal rights as every other student through academic opportunities, learning, and financial aid. Students are supposed to be responsible for choices made in college as it is beneficial for our future; however, most importantly we need to be responsible for maintaining academic honesty, meet staff expectations, and taking control of our future.
My ultimate lifetime goal is to give back to the community, I feel that we are all the same and we all must help each other as fellow human beings. I like helping people because you have the sense that you know that you did something good when you see the smiles on their faces. The President of our school has one phrase that he always repeats, “to whom much is given much is expected.” Fr. Lahart SJ reminds us that we have been given gifts and with those gifts we must try our best to give back to those who need those same gifts.
I’ve always had a passion for helping others and I love the idea of being considered a dependable person. I enjoy when others come to me to talk about the hardship they are experiencing and being able to provide them with feedback or helpful advice. To do this I learned that you need to have the characteristics of a “people person”. You must be patient, which from my job experience of working in retail and the fast food industry, I would consider myself to be a highly patient person. I also posses the the skill of being outgoing and friendly. I allow myself to be comfortable when speaking with different types of people and I let myself open up so I can personally relate to them. People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
Thousands of homeless animals are looking for forever homes in America. Volunteering is a great way to give to your community and socialize the animals at the shelters. Working with dogs and cats that have not had good starts in their lives helps them trust again. It helps animals get over the trauma they have had before they went to the shelter. Socializing makes the animal more adoptable and they are given a chance to get forever homes. Volunteer at your local humane society 's and help out the animals like I have worked with in shelters.
Are you kind to everyone, parents, friends, peers, etc? Are they kind? Being kind or not plays a large part in community environments. According to CNTraveler Charleston, SC is currently the kindest city in the United States. It is likely that Charleston has a better community than here in Madison, WI. Being kind allows for better communication, and it also helps one to become a positive force in another's life. These are both very important factors in life. If one is a negative force in a friends life or even in a random person's life, one never knows how much that could hurt another.
Kindness is the key to most everything. Being kind means taking the high road, even when someone has wronged you. It means serving other people, even under inconvenient circumstances.It involves looking for the good in others, and even helping them to see the good in themselves. Kindness is spreading happiness to make other’s day better and by making them smile. Kindness is defending those who are picked on by others, sitting by those who are lonely, and saying hi to someone in the hall. Kindness is being someone who wants to build up those around them.
Compassion recognizes the humanity of our society and accepts that all of us have our weaknesses we all cannot be kind-hearted, but trying is worth it. Yet, compassion does not mean you cannot carry feelings of intensity which compares with passion. You’re not obligated to feel compassionate all of the time, but it doesn’t hurt if you are. You may come across people who make you angry, I was raised in a household where karma existed. If you did everything you needed too; to treat people, the right way and they didn’t do the same, karma would get them. Karma and compassion do not contradict one another but complement each other.
