Coffee Shop Observation Paper

A cloudy afternoon led me to Sweet Espressions Coffee Shop right off of the square of Downtown Kirksville. The first thing I see are two lonely tables, and two lonely benches outside of the coffee shop. When I open the wooden door I am not flooded with the smell of coffee, as I would typically expect. In front of me was a clear walkway to the counter to order whatever I desired. The menu was full of goodies that any person could come to appreciate. I observed how the young woman interacted with my two friends and me. She was very open, she had a nose ring, hair pulled up into a bun, and a hipster-sort-of-style. I ordered a Rootbeer Float. After I paid, I searched for the bathroom. It did not take long to find. Along the way I saw a young girl, maybe six or seven, sitting on a couch in a lounge area towards the back of the building. I ventured up the creaky wooden stairs, and noticed how much colder it was due to the vents blasting right next to the three older ladies enjoying a cup of coffee. I saw two room dividers covering the imperfections of the industrial aspects of the loft area. I looked up, and saw Christmas lights hung; over half of the lightbulbs were out. The more I thought about the more I noticed that the coffee shop was run-down, but still enjoyed by many locals and students alike. I sat down to truly observe my surroundings. The walls were filled with odd items like: frames with no pictures, mirrors, odd art, clocks, and plates. Half of the coffee shop were brick walls, and the other half were wood panels against a tan dry wall. There was a single glass chandelier hanging, awkwardly to the left of the shop. There were three fans, and one simple light on the ceiling. I looked down, and saw a black furnace making me belive this set of buildings were very old.
