Throughout the semester co-op has taught me many things about myself and my future. I have learned about my skills and effectiveness in the workplace; I have learned about the tasks I may be required to complete in a future workplace, and how this new information will affect my path and decisions in the future. Co-op has been a very beneficial course for me, teaching me a lot about myself. This semester has provided me with a new appreciation of skills I had previously acquired and skills I should improve on. Some of the tasks I have enjoyed are the engineering tasks that have been assigned. Previously I had thought that I would like tasks that were less hands on and more office based due to the fact that I am fairly clumsy and usually I can do things in theory but am lacking when I need to do it practically. The desk work that I have been doing regularly has become boring and I find myself daydreaming and thinking about other things. I haven’t really been one to daydream in class or not pay attention and this is the first time that I have truly felt bored from my task and not been able to focus. I don’t know if this is because my tasks have always been changing, the nature of this work doesn’t excite me, or the hands on tasks have just been more motivating because it is a change from the robotic nature of the other tasks. All in all, the work that I have been doing has made me realise that I will likely need a job that allows me to work on different tasks more often, or has more hands on work and less desk work. This placement has helped me ensure that the path I have been following seems to be right for me. I was hesitant to apply for mechanical engineering at Carleton due to how hands on it looked during tours but as the paragraph above states, these doubts have been cleared up. But this knowledge hasn’t made everything better; I have been accepted to computer science at Carleton but haven’t
