Climate Change In Canada

The average temperature of the Earth has risen by 1.5˚F over the past century. And it is believed that the average temperature will raise another 0.5˚F to 8.6˚F over the next hundred years. Small changes on the Earth’s average temperature will lead to huge impacts on climate, weather and environment. As the climate change issue is getting more serious, many countries are setting up laws and regulation to reduce the amount of Greenhouse gas. According to the INDC (intended nationally determined contributions), Canada has stated that “intends to achieve an economy wide target to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% below 2005 levels by 2030”. It is too ambitious for Canada to meet this target.

One of the major reason is tar sand production. Tar sand is a fast growing of GHGs emission in Canada. It emits large amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gas to the atmosphere and it would affect the environment. In 2014, the production of tar sand was about 2.2 million barrels per day and it estimated that the production of tar sand will increase to 4.0 million barrels per day in 2030, which is the double of the production in 2014. Tar sand can be the major problem of Canada’s GHGs emission by 2030.
Canada has a high consumption of energy per capita among other countries. The growth of population is one of the reasons that makes Canada has a high energy consumption. In order to meet the needs of energy, Canada has to rely on coal and tar sand. It will increase the emission of GHGs. Through the example of tar sand production and high consumption of energy and the fact that Canada is one of the top10 countries that emit large amount of GHGs and one of the highest consumption of energy per capita in the world, therefore Canada is responsible to be a larger role in the climate change
