Have you ever taken the time to think of how different your life could’ve been? Whether you live on a farm in the middle of Nebraska, are a world renowned fashion designer rooted deep in the heart of New York City, or give skiing lessons on a weekly basis in Colorado, you may have pondered the idea of leading a different lifestyle. Yet, one large question remains: would your life be better if you led a different one? Just look around our society today and you see multitudes of people unsatisfied with the conditions of their life. It doesn’t matter if they’re a single mother, a rich architect, or a middle-class, run-of-the-mill student; anyone could suddenly feel the urge to change their present conditions. This statement of fact need not be proved though, for one could already guess that very few are truly happy inside and out. The real debatable question here is whether or not switching your way of living would genuinely alter your being in the positive way intended. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter if any of the descriptions above describe you to a tee or if every situation is off the mark of your daily routine; No matter the life you live, the grass will never be greener on the other side. It’s one’s cognitive rationalization that changes circumstances, not change per se, and living with a mentality such as this is by no means beneficial for our being. For starters, everybody experiences problems within their life. Not a day goes by where someone on the planet isn’t tested with an extremely trying situation. Thus, one should draw the conclusion that no matter where they go or what they do, difficulties will eventually arise and make their path moderately rocky. Adversities are often given a negative connotation and view, as most consider them to be hurdles which impede progress. Nevertheless when taken in and accepted under a positive light, adversities can serve as stepping stones through which an individual can better their character. In the face of looming obstacles individuals who persevere come out of the situation as stronger, determined, and more hopeful for the future.

Hold onto your true self.” This quotation by (Gugu Mbatha-raw) states that negative external forces can affect one's characteristics and identity by urging them to change. Unfavourable external forces are all around the world, the environment that you live in, family and friends are some examples of rejecting external forces. They all have the power to change one's characteristics and identity.
The writer's purpose in this piece is to inform their audience that if one changes oneself they can make a difference in the world, hence inspire people to change their ways to "make the world a better place".
The obstacles which we must face are not there to hinder our daily life. They are there to provide countless opportunities to obtain greater success. In order to be successful we must look at every obstacle as a new opportunity.
	The Discipline section of M. Scott Peck’s The Road Less Traveled first deals with life’s difficulties. He makes it clear that we all have problems and pain but we have to deal with it to get by and to make life less difficult. "Life is difficult... Once we truly know that life is difficult--once we truly understand and accept it--then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters."(p.15)
Everyone has trials and tribulations in life , and everyone has obstacles to overcome. We might not have the same opinions, paths, and ways of living; but we all, millions of people around the world, share the same purpose of life: Being able to say “I am having a good life!” What we mean by “good life” is living in pure happiness and having a wonderful peace of mind. The difference between us is that each one of us chooses a different way in his pursuit of happiness. Some find it in stability with a big house, a family, and a good paying job. Some find it in adventure and wildness, travel, and taking risks. While others don’t really have specific criteria or an organized plan, they just believe that happiness comes with living each day as if it was the last, with no worries about the rest. Personally, I find it in trying to be the best version of myself, in staying true to my principles, and in the same time in being able to make my own decisions; which reminds me of what George Loewenstein said “Just because we figure out that X makes people happy and they're choosing Y, we don't want to impose X on them.”
“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”(Michael Jordan). Every once in awhile, people are faced with hardships, it’s just a matter of life. However, some of these people may not know how to deal with these obstacles that they are facing. In moments of adversity I discovered my attitude impacts the result of the issue, and those around me. Charles Swindoll once said, “Life is ten percent what happens to you, and ninety percent how you react to it.” Adversity has shaped who I am by allowing me to see the result of my attitude and actions. Throughout life, every individual will face obstacles. Some could and will be life changing, and others will have little to no impact. When a “not so great” situation is placed in front of someone, the most important part is how a person works through it and what they learn from the experience. The outcome is also crucial, and of course a good one is always hoped for, but what will you take away from working through your tough time? Even when a circumstance does not end exactly the way you wanted, a lesson learned and a more open mind is hard to complain about. I was taught this lesson when moving four hours north to Boerne, Texas from the small town of Harlingen, Texas.
I used to think that I welcomed uncertainty with open arms, but I now know that I currently reside in the normal state which is preventing my own deep change experience. This book’s reoccurring subject of living a slow death in the normal state, personally stuck with me as I have been trying to figure out how to explain the lifestyle I would like to avoid. People don't truly accept life for what it is until they've actually tasted adversity and went through those misfortunes and suffering. We are put through many hardships in life, and we learn to understand and deal with those issues along the way. We find that life isn't just about finding one's self, but about creating and learning from our experiences and background. Adversity shapes what we are and who we become as individuals. Yann Martel's Life of Pi shows us that adverse situations help shape a person's identity and play a significant role in one's lief by determining one's capabilities and potential, shaping one's beliefs and values, and defining the importance and meaning of one's self.
