One of the most meaningful achievements that I have recently participating in was dedicating six months of planning and time into a civil engagement project that have impacted families during the holiday season. With a group of individuals who are willing to make a difference in our community, the amount of efforts that were contributed into the task created a lifetime worth of memories in the lives of the mothers and children who came to the event. Throughout the event, it was rewarding to see smiles on the faces of the mothers while watching their children play Christmas-themed carnival games and enjoying the activities that were planned the team. Personally, I believe the event was a complete success considering the type of responses that
Later that year, I was accepted into Spanish Honors Society, a volunteer based program to help out the Spanish communities near my school along with volunteering to help raise money for organizations that help less developed countries. One particular project that I helped raise money for through Spanish Honors Society, was Project Running Waters. The money raised for this event was donated to help people living in Guatemala receive fresh water through pipe systems that would be built. We raised over one thousand dollars to donate to this cause. Knowing that I can positively impact individuals in my community and in other countries makes me feel like I have grown maturely and am able to understand what needs to be done to make a difference to
In the past, I have volunteered for our bands fundraiser every Christmas, which we host at our high school. It is a unique moment in time, to see the joy of children's faces as they walk into the school that morning for Breakfast with Santa. Being able to put on a performance for those children that morning brings joy to my heart and keeps me coming back each year. Another event is the Special Olympics held in Houghton Lake. Students from our school every year go and help setup and run the Special Olympics. Helping out and getting to talk to participants is an honor and has created new relationships with people. I want to be able to give even more back to my wonderful community through the National Honor Society by volunteering and helping as much as I can. Meeting new people, and helping them in ways that can change their life can have a permanent effect on one's self, and NHS opens that
...ns were made which affected the outcomes of the event. We should have had a weekly project planning system worked out which would have also saved us from losing a week during the project. In the future though, more should be spoken of military personnel and their accomplishments. From all the hard work we did, we always have mistakes that help us remember what to do better next time. In this case, the venue, time of the event, its marketing should have been more high profile to buzz in more audience. More resources should be added for the next time, but we did cover a lot of ground in this event and it was laid out in detail with focus. The event, indeed, turned out to be more amazing than expected!
Civil disobedience has been around for a long time. In Bible times Christians would disobey laws that would go against their beliefs, such as the law that they couldn’t preach. (Acts 4) Christians still disobey laws in many countries that do not let them practice their faith, some end up in jail or killed.
Through this, I learned a lot about not only racism, but how to communicate and step into a leadership role at my school. Although this scared me, I fought through y fear of public speaking, empowering me through increased confidence in myself and sense of giving back to one of my communities. Additionally, I am currently helping to create the world of the Dickens Fair, which takes individuals in San Francisco into the Victorian street of London. I know that I will find joy and personal maturation not only through stepping outside of my comfort zone, but by acting with the audience in character and being doing so creating a magical world which people can find joy in. Also, I will also find happiness doing this because the Dickens Fair has the capability to transport people and immerse them in an age not ruled by cellphones and device, but one were the connections we make with human beings are the focus. Also, like I described earlier and will further elaborate on in a later question, I have accomplished co leading a girls adoption group and through that helped build a supportive and safe community. Also, it has challenged me as I have to help deal with the conflicts the girls are experiencing and communicate with them effectively and with compassion. Lastly, I have accomplished a full year of playing on my high school’s soccer team.
Being in a school that brought students from various counties and cities with different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, opened my eyes to seeing just how diverse humanity is. In a time when everyone is struggling with personal problems, I know how monumental a simple volunteer act can be. One of my favorite acts of service is tutoring. I tutored an elementary-aged girl for two years in Fort Lee and I will always remember those two years as the most fulfilling. Education is so precious, and children are the most open to it. Not only was I able to teach her math and reading comprehension skills, but how to carry herself as a smart and extraordinarily capable young lady. In return, she taught me patience and how sometimes you just need to approach a problem differently to see the
My high point for the week was assisting with the Cops & Kids Basketball Tournament. The feeling was supportive since it was welcoming to observe the police officers interact with the youths at the
Activities and philosophies that advocate for the connecting of communities with socially sentient beliefs and actions is what have come to be referred to as civic engagement. They are thus individual or collective actions aimed at addressing issues that are deemed to be of public concern. They can be manifested in many ways including; public service, civil activity, service-learning, crusading and advocacy to mention but a few as the list is endless.
While only a small percentage of the entire workforce was able to participate in the event, its intention was to provide employees with something to strive toward. It was also rejuvenating for those given the opportunity to attend. The event was inspiring and left you with the feeling that you work for a great company and they do care about you; so much so that they are willing to spend a lot of money and provide you with a wonderful experience . The event also focused heavily on the driving force of the company: the students and helping them to improve and change their lives. Employees returned to work feeling inspired and ready to do just that. The event provided the company with an opportunity to invest in their employees, reward them, and make them feel
Civic engagement is promoting the quality of life in a community through both political and non-political process. The more we have on our brain the more stressed we are and the less empathy we feel for others and reduce our own happiness. Worrying about something that’s going to happen can affect the brain from functioning effectively on that moment. When the mind is absent, the body is usually absent too.
In our American government class, we had an great opportunity on participating in the Civic Engagement Project. Each of us can pick up a topic that we are interested in, and joined the activity offered from the agency that is related to our topic. I participated in RAINN Day activity which was lead by Women’s leadership Project under the Center of Civic Engagement. Attending in this activity helped me to understand more about what RAINN Day is, and learned more about the sexual violence on collage campus. The RAINN Day activity which was hold this year was to call on attention of college students to protect themselves from the sexual violence on campus.
Theater 180 addressed the quest question of how do people understand and engage in community life? Through this class I’ve gained a better understanding of what civic engagement is. At the start of this semester I had very minimal knowledge about civic engagement. As far as I knew civic engagement was just volunteering but nothing much beyond that. With this class I have learned that civic engagement is much more than just volunteer work.
The Importance of Civil Engagement Organizations According to Democracy in America, a 19th century work penned by Alexis de Tocqueville, “The health of a democratic society may be measured by the quality of functions performed by private citizens.” Tocqueville seemed to believe that the driving force behind American democracy was the willingness to create and maintain civil associations. This idea is very true. Civic organizations such as the NAACP, MADD, and LULAC all rally together citizens who support a common interest and are willing to personally commit to engaging in these organizations to build a productive, efficient and significant impact for change.
This year my honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, and I participated in the Martin Luther King Day of Service Project. This project offered awards to organizations that positively impact the community. In addition, the project honored Dr. King’s legacies of non-violent activism, racial equality, service to others and social uplift. This was a 10-week project in which we served our community for eight weeks. Although I’ve participated in this project for
Civil society is both a way of describing aspects of modern society and an aspiration, an ideal of what a good society should be like. It has recently been revived to emphasize the capacity of societies to organize themselves through the active cooperation of their members. Unfortunately up to today we still don't have a universally recognised definition and the whole concept is still the core of a intense academic debate. That is why it seemed appropriate, for the purpouse of this paper, to analyse the historical evolution of the concept throughout the centuries.
