Christopher Columbus, the famed explorer who “Sailed the Ocean Blue in 1492.” born in 1451 to Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarossa, credited with the discovery of “The New world,” with his Spanish patrons he was able to make multiple voyages to the Americas. Eventually, he died in 1506 in Spain.
Rejected by multiple Kings, he talked to the monarchs of Spain, and were intrigued by him and kept him waiting until their war with the Muslims was over. When the war was over in 1492, Columbus continued to ask about it, until only 8 months later when they approved his voyage. Taking three ships, they sailed to Asia and ended up in the Bahamas. He traded with the natives to get glass beads and various other items. For starters, he expanded the world of trade and discovered the Americas that provided new goods and items for the world. On the other hand, he expanded the slave trade due to the high demand of workers on the new fields in the Americas. Because of his discovery, he did make Spain rich and wealthy, allowing it to thrive. This did cause problems, for as the trade grew, for the natives weren’t immune to their diseases yet and died of very common diseases that the traders would bring with them.
The question is, was the impact good or bad? He enslaved the Taino people and wrote in his journal “They do not carry arms or know them.... They should be good servants.” (Myint). Not only did he enslave them but he also threatened them with mutilation, and death, he even mistreated the colony he was put in charge of and increase slave trade. The only thing that makes him good for the world, was that he discovered the Americas, but that probably is big enough to consider him to be a good impact. His discovery led to an increase in trade and wealth for the world, made the economy great
