Why is Christopher Columbus such a controversial topic? Some believe he was great; others feel he was pure evil. Either way, it is undeniable that Christopher Columbus changed the way people were used to living into how we do things today. Although he was not the first European to voyage across the Atlantic Ocean and discover America, Christopher Columbus’s exploration had a lasting effect on the narrative of World History. Although kings were looking to explore, Columbus was rejected by Portugal, Genoa, and Venice before getting a sponsor. After a wait, the Spanish monarchy, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, agreed to sponsor Columbus’ three-ship voyage (Christopher). Across the ocean, there is a Native American group known as the Taino. The Taino is a large, subgroup of the Arawakan Indians (Rivera). They traveled from South America and landed on their new home more than 2,000 years earlier. Occupying the Lesser Antilles and Puerto Rico and pushing into the Greater Antilles-Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Cuba by 700 C.E., their population was increasing. (Ojibwa). In 1492, 100 million people are estimated to be living the Americas (Ojibwa). This decrease was mainly cause by death. Due to the food shortages because of the Spanish, starvation led to death. European diseases new to the native people, had a large influence on the population. Also battles and violence with the Spanish caused the number of Taino people to decrease (Ojibwa). However, slavery had a huge impact on the population and even led to the effects of population listed above. The second effect of Columbus was positive. Across the Atlantic Ocean, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, along with the rest of Spain, were thriving. The expedition brought an enormous amount of wealth to the country. Not only were they the wealthiest nation, they became the most powerful as well. Along with Spain, this expedition led other nations to explore across the ocean to build colonies in the New World. It gave people hope and confidence to look for new things all around them. Why is Christopher Columbus such a controversial topic? This is because he was a conqueror. With this title, it brings the word death and control to mind. However, he is also an explorer. He is the first European explorer to settle in the Americas, who brought wealth and power to Europe, and more settlements in the Americas. Myint author of “Christopher Columbus: Hero or Villain?” and Ransby author of “Columbus and the Making of Historical Myth.”, are faced with the same dilemma. From a young age children are taught about Columbus and his greatness, but the books fail to document the atrocities committed in the process. Most of the books use biased language; little evidence and vague language is used to hail Columbus as a great hero. Myint provides a more objective stance, while Ransby condemns Columbus entirely. However, both suggest to consider Columbus a hero is a mistake.
Christopher Columbus was a European explorer who a more fitting title would be a conqueror. He didn't discover anything as the common believe would say, rather he conquered already inhabited land. Christopher Columbus "exploration" had a bunch of direct and indirect effects. The exploration sponsored by the King and Queen of Spain had direct effects such as giving Spain control over new land and giving Christopher Columbus the fame he so desired, furthermore the so-called exploration also had some indirect effects such as allowing other nations to sail West and it also affected the Natives and increased the slave trade.

Many people believe that he was a hero whose discoveries lead to the possibilities we have in America today, while many other condemn him for the deaths of many Native Americans that occurred to make it possible to live in America today. What would someone like me see in Columbus’ discoveries and enslavements? He introduced the Europeans to new products and ways of financial expansion. Even though Columbus gave us a head start to a better life here in America, what lengths did he go to make such a life possible? He brought over diseases to the natives and also grazing animals to eat up the vegetation. These deaths would have never occurred if not for the countries that funded the exploration. Columbus and the Europeans would never have come to the Americas when they did and so many natives would not have died.

Schools teach students that Columbus was a great man, found gold and pearls, and discovered new lands. Students are even taught the names of Christopher Columbus' three ships he used on his first voyage. However, they grow up not knowing the truth about Christopher Columbus, what he really did to 'accomplish' his tasks. I simply believe that schools should show both sides of Columbus' story, so that students can be aware of the facts behind the 'discovery' of Early America.

Would you like to be captured and become a slave for some main that came to your land? I doubt that anyone would like for this to happen so could you image the many slaves killed and forced to work for Christopher Columbus. Also, I highly doubt that anyone would like to hop on a ship and go somewhere in Europe that you don’t even know. The natives were good people, and they were a part of the world too. I believe that Christopher Columbus was a villain for coming to the natives land unwanted, he also only wanted to find gold and seize power, and because Columbus in my mind was a hypocrite.
