Christopher Columbus, one of the most famous explorers with an extraordinary legacy was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. He was an Italian explorer and navigator and is very well known for his four voyages and his “discovery” of the New World. Columbus began sailing when he was just a teenager in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. Later, he moved to Lisbon, Portugal and then Spain, where he spent the rest of his life. Columbus’ purpose was to find a passage to Asia by sailing West, but during his voyage he ended up in the Caribbeans and South America. Columbus’ proposal was turned down by King John of Portugal and the rulers of England and France. Once King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain heard that Columbus believed that he could find a shorter route to get to Asia, they saw their opportunity and took it, but what they did not know was that the calculations Columbus had gotten of the earth were wrong and they would not end up in Asia. At last, Columbus did not land in Asia, but instead ended up in a whole different continent. Christopher Columbus is well remembered today. The discoveries Columbus made are well appreciated and even though, Columbus is credited with discovering the New World, Columbus really didn’t accomplish any of his goals because he didn’t find any riches for Spain and he didn’t discover the New world nor was he the first to visit. However, he gave the people the opportunity of exploration on the American continent and just like everyone else Columbus had his ups and downs during his four voyages. During his last two years of life after his last voyage, Columbus recovered some of his riches and tried to recover his titles, but didn’t have any luck.
