Christians have a great opportunity to impact the global food system through a career in agriculture education. For Christian teachers to accomplish this task, we need to analyze what specific content knowledge and skills agriculture students will need to address current and future economic, environmental, and spiritual challenges. Christian agriculture educators should teach their students to consider current issues and apply their skills in agricultural policy and marketing to respond to these issues and promote the idea of sustainability at both local and international levels. The decisions made by local and international governments greatly impact the efficiency at which food and goods can be distributed around the globe. As a teacher, I plan to inform my students about how these decisions are made and how to analyze their respective consequences. In addition, I will help my students develop skills for handling situations of conflict during when making difficult decisions. Many areas of society, require leaders and member to be able deal with conflict appropriately. In today’s world, the next generation will not have the luxury to remain passive. The decisions being made not only in the global food system, but also in local communities, schools, and churches are too important for them to ignore. I hope to challenge my students to consider the issues in marketing such as the concentration of market power, the disappearance public price discovery, unequal distribution of market information, and government involvement. Students should have a general understanding of how the food they purchase at the grocery store is priced. They will also need to understand why that price may be extremely different from the price they get when they sell their grain or livestock. I firmly believe that possessing the skills to understand and perform a market analysis can greatly improve one’s success in the agriculture industry.
