The profile of an effective Christian school administrator includes a natural blend of both personality and ability. The ideal school administrator is a visionary, team-oriented educator and leader who models servant leadership by example. Jesus was a leader with a clear vision. He saw things that could be and should be and worked to make them a reality in His people (Jones, 1992). As a school leader in the 21st century, it is imperative that vision, character, and implementation be the focus. Leaders that prepare well in charting their course convey confidence and trust to those they lead (Maxwell, 1998). A clear vision is critical in order to serve as an effective leader. Christian school leaders should sense a calling to leadership based on the conviction that the Lord has placed them in this position at this particular time. Leading like Jesus starts on the inside; it is a heart issue and a heart motivated by self-interest will result in a barrier towards this end (Blanchard & Hodges, 2005). The leader must view all aspects of the school and of leadership through the eyes of Christ and be the chief leader of the development of a Biblical worldview in the spiritual formation of students. The leader must remain current on best educational practices, be deeply knowledgeable of innovative instructional strategies and academic standards, and be proficient in curriculum, instruction, and assessment of students. Maxwell (1998) states the following related to what leaders should know: Information is vital to a leader. You need a grasp of the facts, an understanding of the factors involved, and a vision for the future. Knowledge alone won’t make someone a leader, but without it, he can’t become one. I always spent a lot of time doing homework before I tried to take the lead in an organization. (p. 62)
Another key quality of a school administrator is someone who is confident in leading, developing, and improving teachers and staff.
