Food for the Hungry is a Christian humanitarian organization helping the poor, with Sponsorship programs and operations in 26 countries.
Its stated mission is:
To walk with churches, leaders and families in overcoming all forms of human poverty by living in healthy relationship with God and His creation.
Food for the Hungry was founded by Larry Ward in 1971, due to his ‘hurting heart’ for the suffering of the 12,000 children dying of hunger at that time in Haiti and Bangladesh. Since then, Food for the Hungry has been actively providing aid to the world’s most vulnerable people without consideration of race, gender or religion when it comes to helping the poor. Food for the Hungry works towards turning these into healthy, productive places for children to grow up in.
FH is one of the key four humanitarian organizations we are considering here. Food for the Hungry previously focused on food distribution and economic development programs, but now increasingly focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention.
At present, Food for the Hungry is;
• Establishing savings groups in Bangladesh which helps women start businesses to leave poverty and injustice behind
• Training farmers to use plants that do well in harsh climates and agricultural techniques that develop large crop yields
• Food for the Hungry care groups reduce child mortality in communities by as much as 62 percent
• Working with churches, leader and families in communities worldwide to bring Christ’s love and truth
• Working with communities throughout the world to provide clean water

According to the “Hunger and Poverty Fact Sheet” on Feeding America’s website, in 2014 there were over 48 million Americans living in food insecure households, which included 32 million adults and 15 million children. For over 35 years, Feeding America continues to be in the forefront in solving this crisis by providing food to people in need through a nationwide network of food banks. In the late 1960s, Van Hengel established the nation’s first food bank and years later established the first national organization of food banks, Second Harvest. Second Harvest was later called America’s Second Harvest the Nation’s Food Bank Network and in 2008, the national organization changed its name to Feeding America.
In Janet Poppendieck's “Want Amid Plenty: From Hunger To Inequality” she argues that America puts excessive focus upon hunger issues among the poor when there are many other important issues that go unnoticed. Poppendieck believes that it is time to find a way to shift the discourse from undernutrition to unfairness, from hunger to inequality. In today's society, there are many food banks, food drives, soup kitchens, etc. Food is extremely abundant in America, therefore Poppendieck's statement is proven true when she states that there is too much focus on hunger. Throughout this text, she strongly supports her claims about hunger, equality, and poverty in general.
In 1630, the Massachusetts Bay Company set sail to the New World in hope of reforming the Church of England. While crossing the Atlantic, John Winthrop, the puritan leader of the great migration, delivered perhaps the most famous sermon aboard the Arbella, entitled “A Model of Christian Charity.” Winthrop’s sermon gave hope to puritan immigrants to reform the Church of England and set an example for future immigrants. The Puritan’s was a goal to get rid of the offensive features that Catholicism left behind when the Protestant Reformation took place. Under Puritanism, there was a constant strain to devote your life to God and your neighbors. Unlike the old England, they wanted to prove that New England was a community of love and individual worship to God. Therefore, they created a covenant with God and would live their lives according to the covenant. Because of the covenant, Puritans tried to abide by God’s law and got rid of anything that opposed their way of life. Between 1630 and the 18th century, the Puritans tried to create a new society in New England by creating a covenant with God and living your life according to God’s rule, but in the end failed to reform the Church of England. By the mid 1630’s, threats to the Puritans such as Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson, and Thomas Hooker were being banned from the Puritan community for their divergent beliefs. 20 years later, another problem arose with the children of church members and if they were to be granted full membership to the church. Because of these children, a Halfway Covenant was developed to make them “halfway” church members. And even more of a threat to the Puritan society was their notion that they were failing God, because of the belief that witches existed in 1692.

Hunger is defined in the dictionary as "the painful sensation or state of weakness caused by the need of food" Hunger is not easy and it is certainly not right to watch another starve when you know you can help. In conclusion, fighting food insecurity and poor nutrition among low income families, particularly in developing countries, is a complex task. It requires many different strategies as there are many factors influencing hunger and why it occurs. The three strategies chosen are effective on their own, but implemented together will address many more of the determinants causing this issue. The World Food Programmes strategy is a quick fix when solving this problem and is not sustainable, but alongside Oxfam and MicroLoans strategies, they would all make an extremely positive change in how food insecurity looks today.
There are currently 925 million people that are starving in the world today. It hurts to think about all of those people that do not make it through the night due to hunger. Hunger is, as explained in the oxford dictionary, “the uneasy or painful sensation caused by craving appetite.
