Poverty is a critical issue around the world. If no one shines a light on the situation, nothing will be done to help fix problem issues poor people face by being stuck in poverty. Inside the class, there was a lot of great information presented about the topic from great people like Dorothy Day, and Pope Benedict. CST which stands for Catholic Social Teaching touched on this subject a lot. CST has a few main points which are the promotion of human dignity through a just distribution of wealth (U.S. Catholic). Some people may not know that public authorities are not protecting the rights of poor. (U.S. Catholic). From all the materials we read inside of class the best way to help take poor people out of poverty is by taking action and assist them in. In The Long Loneliness, Dorothy Day started a very powerful movement that helped many people called the Catholic Worker movement. In The story, her husband Peter Maurin said: "we are our brother's keeper, and the unit of society is the family: that we must have a sense of personal responsibility." The world would become a better because everyone is looking out for each other. No one is too big or too small to help end this horrible thing everyone must play his or her role in putting an end to poverty. We do not realize how easy it is for a person to fall into poverty: A lost job, a sudden illness, a death in the family or the endless cycle of being born into poverty and not knowing how to overcome it. There are so many children in poverty and a family's structure can effect the outcome. Most of the people who are at the poverty level need some type of help to overcome the obstacles. Poverty is the state of being extremely poor or being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount. In 2010, 16.4 million children, or 22.0 percent, were poor in the United States alone. (Tanner, 2014) The poverty rate for children also varies substantially by race and origin. If the rate of poverty continues to rise, will there be any hope left in humanity? The real question is not what is poverty but why is there so many people living in it. The ideal job of the government (federal and state) is to create a better/safer environment for the people. The model the “government” campaign is that everything they do is for the “benefit” of the people. When does the word “benefit” come into play when twenty-two percent of the population cannot supply a place for their children to sleep, put food on the table, and get a job that pays well enough to support their family. Are there any real benefits knowing families living in poverty have only one percent of a chance of getting out? Who is to blame? Where and how did this problem all start? What is this so called “government” doing to help stop the increasing rate of poverty? “People that are in poverty have made poor choices and put themselves there but you don’t see any of them working to get themselves out of it.” This statement is completely false. I know of multiple families that have struggled to get themselves out of poverty and it wasn’t completely their fault. In one family, a man named Michael (Mike; currently age 34) has worked since the age of 13 and started saving his money for a car for when he got his license. Mike was finally able to afford a car and bought one and then he had a child named Alyssa with a lady named Tammy about 2 years later. They had another child named Taylor 1.5 years later and everything was going well, and then Tammy and Mike had began fighting very often and had to split up. Tammy got addicted to doing drugs so the children got left with Mike who worked 45+ hours a week and still couldn’t support the family that well. 4 years later, Mike met someone else named Becky and they had a child together

This can be implied towards people living in poverty as we can follow the steps that Jesus had undertaken to love other people even if they are your enemies. Poverty is prevalent throughout the world around us. We watch television and see famous people begging us to sponsor a child for only ten dollars a month. We think in our own minds that ten dollars is only pocket change, but to those children and their families, that ten dollars is a large portion of their annual income. We see images of starving children in far away countries, and our hearts go out to them. But we really do not know the implications of poverty, why it exists, or even what we can do to help combat this giant problem in our world.
