To begin, children who are exposed to domestic violence at home find it hard to interact with the society. Children are becoming more aggressive, lashing out and bullying others or they become passive and withdrawn, thinking that they cannot change anything in their lives. Most importantly, children may become fearful and anxious, believing that the world is a dangerous place. It is also said that whether the children who are exposed to domestic violence is a boy or girl, the chances of repeating the cycle, is at greater risk. Obviously, children who witness violence towards their mothers are at risk for learning various negative social behaviours, and would develop inappropriate expectations about the roles of a man and woman, in a family.
According to the book, Children Who See Too Much, frequent exposure to violence changes the structure of the developing brain. And, it also leaves marks on the chemistry of a young child’s brain (Groves, 37). The children begin to be afraid of their environment because they see their world as unpredictable and dangerous. Hence, them become very aware of their environment, they become guarded waiting for the next dangerous thing that might happen (Groves, 46) Seeing violence at home also affects the child in school. Because their fight or flight system is always running, it begins to interfere with the ability to do learning tasks in school. “They do not complete assignments. Children are also at risk for both internalizing factors such as anxiety, depression, and self-blame. They are also susceptible to externalizing factors such as aggression and delinquency behaviors. Witnessing or hearing abuse can also affect children in the long run. In conclusion, the invisibility of domestic violence has caused numerous negative effects on women, children and the overall structure of modern day society. Women have been affected psychologically as well as socially. Children have been disadvantaged by the effects of domestic abuse within the school environment and in the latter parts of their lives. The effects of exposure can vary from direct effects such as behavioral and developmental issues to interpersonal relationships, all of which lead to detrimental prospects on the child’s development. Often, children do not understand why the violence occurs and may be afraid to share their emotions because of fear. They may associate love and pain together, because this is witnessed in their home. This could lead to psychological problems and confusion about relationships. Children who witness family violence tend to have behavioral, interpersonal, and emotional problems.
In conclusion, certain environments can have a negative impact on children’s subsequent psychological development. In this essay I discussed how an environment of domestic violence and inter-parental conflict and an environment of divorce or separation and the changing of the family structure can negatively affect the child’s psychological development and behaviour. Domestic abuse and inter-parental conflict, even if it is not directed at the child, have the ability of making the child become more susceptible to the same psychological trauma, in terms of development, as children who receive direct physical abuse and maltreatment from their parents. An environment where the child is exposed to conflict and aggressive behaviour from their parents or “models” can also have significant negative impacts on their psychological development.
