On 08/27/15, Denise came to school visibly upset. During the day, Denise disclosed to her counselor that on 08/22/15 her mother slapped her in the face after they argued about wanting to visit her father. The reporter did not see any visible marks or bruises on Denise’s body but the child told her this isn’t the first time her mother has hit her. Denise told the reporter each day after school, her mother makes her strip naked and she searches her body, room, and back pack. There is an alarm system and motion sensors all over the home and a camera in Denise’s room. The child was adopted by Ms. Flowers at the age of 4 and has been in the home since. Denise basic needs are being met at this time.

DSS received a report of physical abuse, physical neglect and substantial risk of physical abuse on March 3, 2017 alleging there is chaos in the home. The reporter stated that Xzavia banged on his mother’s bedroom door on three separate occasions wanting something to eat. The first time he was told to go back to bed and a popping noise was heard. The second time Ms. Kimberly Dawkins grabbed Xzavia by the head, shook him little and told him to go back to bed. The third time Ms. Dawkins grabbed Xzavia, threw him on the bed, got a gun, held him down and pointed it at him. Reporter states there was no clip in the gun. Ms. Dawkins was reported being upset and it was reported that she left the home for twenty minutes but came back. It was reported that while Ms. Dawkins was gone, Xzavia was very upset and he was crying and Tyzhaun stared punching holes in the wall. It was reported that Xzavia says he wanted to die and that Atmorris went and got a knife, stated to Xzavia, “You want to die?”, here’s the knife and the two older brothers, Tyzhaun and Atmorris left the house and Xzavia chased them. It was reported that Xzavia was outside crying and he spent the night with the neighbor.

David suffered physical, mental, and emotional abuse from the age of four to 12-years-old. As his teachers and principal, neighbors, and even his maternal grandmother and father stand by and let the abuse happen, it makes me wonder what they could have done differently. For example, David’s father saw the abuse firsthand and he would try to intervene to help him out initially. David’s father was caught by the madness of his wife in calling him, ‘the boy’ and ‘It’. As much as his father tried to comfort David, he did not have the will to stand up against his wife. Another example, the maternal grandmother commented on bruises visible on David’s body and she did not take action to report her daughter for abusing her grandchild, David. Instead, David’s grandmother stated that she should stay out of it and let David’s mother raise her children as she saw fit. I believed the unreported instances observed by the public to be just as substantial a crime as the child abusers themselves. Also, the Department of Children and Social Services were contacted because of the alleged child abuse events that occurred previously; however, he was not taken from the home because the social worker of the agency sided with David’s mother. The reporter said “Dave swear he is getting off of drugs” and he’s helping her get off; however, the reporter doesn’t really believe it. The reporter said the child has learned bad words from Eden because she curses around him. Eden last had an open case in 2013, and they found out she had her 10 year old urinating in a cup for her, so she could pass her drug test. There is an open case on Eden in Arkansas, and there may be a warrant out for her arrest. REPORTER: The reporter/maternal great grandmother (Sherry) called to report abuse and neglect for the victims, Zane and Abrie. According to Sherry (reporter), Shalana hits Zane and whoops him a lot (unknown when). Shalana slapped him in the mouth (unknown when or how often). It is unknown if there were any visible marks or bruises because “she stays away for days”. The reporter said Shalana hits Abrie on her legs, unknown visible marks or bruises. When the child gets on Shalana’s nerves or when other people agitate her she hit Abrie, according to Sherry (reporter). The reporter said Shalana is punishing Zane by not allowing him to see his grandmother (Sherry Johnson). The reporter said “it is unknown if the children are being fed regularly”.

Along with the progressing decline in society's morals, has come the rapid increase of crime. One such crime is child abuse. Although child abuse is common, the act is defiling. As a result of the abuse, children who fall victim to this often need psychological treatment and counseling. Often, the child is never the same as he or she once was before. The dictionary defines child abuse as: "the physical, or emotional, or sexual mistreatment of children" (Dictionary.com). Everyday thousands of children are the victims of this abuse. The abusers range from parents, friends, total strangers, to even day-care workers.

When it comes to child maltreatment this is especially true, if a parent does not know how to take care of a child, they can abuse or neglect their child. The definition that the Centers for disease Control and Prevention uses is, “Any act or series of acts of commission or omission by a parent or any other caregiver that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child.” Maltreatment can be split into two umbrella categories, acts of omission or acts of commission. Acts of omission are most commonly known as neglect, and can include not meeting the child’s physical, emotional, educational, or medical needs. An act of commission is most commonly physical abuse, but can also extend to the psychological or sexual abuse of a child (“Child Maltreatment”). Child maltreatment is a problem worldwide; the only way to stop it is to give parents a better understanding of the issue.
Through watching and analyzing the first video we have learned: James and Marlene Johnson have five year old boy named Brad. It has come to the attention of Mrs. Johnson, there son Brad may have been sexually abused by their babysitter Mary Stanton. Mary Stanton is being accused of sexually touching Brad’s penis in the bathtub and undressing him. Brad also told his mother, Mary had undressed in front of Brad by taking off her shoes and top. Brad had told his mother Mary pulled on his penis twice. Mary Stanton has been babysitting Brad for approximately one year and is with Brad weekly. Mary is 20 years old, is a part time student at TCI, and pursuing a career in education. Mrs. Johnson was asked if she could ever smell alcohol of Mary Stanton’s
Kayleigh Slusher, a three years old baby girl in Napa Calif. the little baby girl lives with her mother and the mother’s boyfriend, while the real father is in jail. During that time, police often gone the house to visit and check up on the little child well-being and making sure everything is ok, the mother was check on also. On Jan. 30, Kayleigh’s body was found in a suitcase inside a freezer that was left for three days, the body of the child was also found with bruises and sexual assault, the mother (Krueger) and her boyfriend Ryan Scott Warner was arrested at El Cerrito Bart station near a restaurant.
The sympathy of the government for mothers such as Khaila, trying to recover their parental rights has worn thin. Child abandonment is a serious offense and the children that suffer from such neglect face many psychological problems; if they are ever able to survive their circumstances. The abandonment and neglect of a child can result in serious criminal charges. One striking example is the case of seven month old Daniel Scott (Should We Take Away Their Kids?). Baby Daniel had been left for hours unattended and died of in a pool of his own blood. His mother, a crack addict left him in the care of his father to go on a six day crack binge. His father in turn, left him in his crib leaving the door of their Bronx tenement unlocked for any danger to afflict his unprotected son (Should We Take Away Their Kids?). The parents were later charged with manslaughter by negligence.
A three-year-old child approaches the court bench and places her hand over the Holy Bible, swearing to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. She takes a seat at the witness stand while clenching her stuffed animal in her small innocent arms. She gently brushes the bouncy blonde curls from her face as she looks into the eyes of her rapist. For one so small, she is quite strong. I am proud to admit that I was this little girl, and I am a survivor.

Projects that are currently funded are Child Welfare Information Gateway website, the National Resource Center for Child Protective Services, National Quality Improvement Center on Differential Response, annual publication of Child Maltreatment and the initiative on Supporting Evidence-Based Home Visitation to Prevent Child Maltreatment.
