In America’s consumerist society, businesses encourage individuals to purchase their products through the use of creative advertisements that appeal to their internal urges. Each advertisement uses a combination of different appeals to convey a message that resonates to the consumer. Businesses craft their messages based on the target audience that they want to appeal to, making each message communicated different. This is exemplified by the differences between the Chevrolet Suburban ad and the Ford Expedition ad. Immediately as one take’s a glance at the Chevrolet ad, their attention is captured by the Elephant foot thrusting out of the silver suburban. Near the Elephant’s foot there’s fragments of pavement showing, clearly sending a message to the consumer that they too can be earthshattering, that they too can be dominating. The usage of the Elephant in the ad is masterfully done to appeal to one’s need to dominate, because there are few more dominating creatures then an Elephant. Why I believe the Chevrolet Suburban message satisfies my internal urges more than the Ford Expedition, the Ford advertisement is more effective. It is more effective because it is not open to interpretation. The advertisement is clear, directed, and it is pointed towards a key demographic. On the other hand, the lack of focus towards a certain demographic in the Chevrolet advertisement makes it less likely that it will be able to consistently pull in consumers. Though some consumers might fall for the appeals that the advertisement effectively pulls at, the lack of a target audience does not offer the advertisement a foundation to work from.
