Throughout the years there have been several different dynasties. These dynasties had their differences and their similarities. Each dynasty had good or bad rulers, however, the longest lasting dynasties had good effective rulers. These effective rulers helped to promote the growth of the government, which lead to increasing the length of their reign. In order to be an effective ruler, one must choose to exemplify these characteristics, being a role model, being active in the government and creating solutions to the issues facing his subjects, and also protecting them. The ruler should be an excellent role model for his people to look up to. He should exemplify ren in order for the people to know what ren is and how to achieve it. While Confucius was having a discussion with one of his disciples, “Zigong asked about governance. The Master said, ‘Provide the people with adequate food, provide them with adequate weapons, induce them to have faith in their ruler.’” If the people are not well cared for or protected then there is no one for the ruler to govern. It should be a duty of a good ruler to care and protect his subjects as though, they are his children. Besides helping the people by aiding in their wellbeing another way to take an active role is to protect the citizens from growing threats, which pertains anywhere from riots to Mongols. A ruler should protect his subjects from big and little threats alike. Big threats include Mongols, which could result in war and little threats, which include riots. Riots are a threat because the people become angry and start a revolt. It has been shown again and again throughout history and literature that if there is a perfect human he is not also the perfect ruler. Those traits which we hold as good, such as the following of some sort of moral code, interfere with the necessity of detachment in a ruler. In both Henry IV and Richard II, Shakespeare explores what properties must be present in a good ruler. Those who are imperfect morally, who take into account only self-interest and not honor or what is appropriate, rise to rule, and stay in power.

Literature and knowledge were enhanced by wood block printing and movable type printing. Confucianism infused with Buddhist ideals emphasized a new organization of classic texts brought out the core doctrine of Neo-Confucianism. The civil service examinations became more prominent in the Song period. Administrative sophistication and complex organization was during this era. What makes a great ruler? Several great powers in history including Cyrus of Persia, T’ai-tsung, the Duke of Valentine, and Agathocles will be analyzed in order to attempt to answer this question. Based on three readings, these questions will be answered:
Throughout history there have been many leaders who have succeeded and led their people to greatness, and countless others who have failed and brought ruin. A good leader must be courageous, wise, and able to react well to the difficult situations that they may face. One man who had all of these characteristics and more was Charlemagne, King of Frankia located in modern day France. Throughout his long life he united the Frankish kingdoms, saved the papacy from destruction, and fought off barbarians during a critical point in Europe’s history (Sullivan). In addition, he also went on to found two of the world’s most influential kingdoms in history, the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire (Knowles). Charlemagne the Great, as he was known in his home kingdom of Frankia, ultimately fit the mold and even exceeded the requirements for being a good leader set forth by Sun Tzu in his book: The Art of War. He endured many struggles, suffered demoralizing losses, and experienced the highest of victories throughout his storied reign as King of the Franks, Italy, and as the first Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, all of which would last for centuries to come.
Today we can look around ourselves and see thousands of technical innovations that make life easier; But if we take a step back and ask ourselves “How?” we will soon realize that most often, these technological advancements did not just “poof” into existence, but are usually the outcome of building upon yesterday’s technology. If we follow this cycle back into time, we can attribute almost any modern day invention to an ancient civilization during its golden age. China was no exception. China’s Song and Tang dynasties fostered scientific advances comparable to Rome’s during its Pax Romana. The most significant and impacting of these were the development of primitive gunpowder and porcelain of the Tang and paper money, and the magnetic compass of the Song Dynasties. Although these may seem very far off, if you look hard enough, you can see traces of their impacts in society today because most of the advancements today we owe to them.
