Culturally diverse learners have a lot of different characteristics that make them unique to the classroom environment. They might be a different race or they might have different ethnicities, they might have a very different socioeconomic status than other students in the classroom, have different cognitive or social development. These examples are just a few characteristics of being a culturally diverse learner. Characteristics of these examples can influence how the students interacts in the classroom, such as remaining quiet and not participating or feeling annoyed, which might make the student more likely to act out. Future teachers and current teachers should be aware of these characteristics as well as embrace these differences and be flexible in the classroom to avoid hindering achievement in these students because of these differences. …show more content…

For example, there can be a language barrier, or that they never attended school before in their previous country. It also could be that they have different social norms between them, their peers, and their teachers. An example of how a student’s culture background could impact their learning is just simply misinterpreting the student and their abilities. Students growing up from different cultural environments can be taught to not argue or compete with others. This may make the student refrain from speaking up during class or answer questions and may lead a teacher to believe that their student doesn’t know the answer or doesn’t understand the material, when in fact they do. If the teacher dose not recognize that the student does not comprehend the material due to diversity reason, they might recommend the student to go into special programs, such as special education, which they do belong
